cheers,

You 'might' if you find the right company.

Ive used motorcycle NCB on a car before, some insurance companies seem happy to do it. But one thing is for sure, they wont do car NCB onto a bike policy.

I had a BX 14 when I was 17 and I was paying about £1200 fully comp.

A year later I bought a BX 1.9 16v and got it insured for about £1500 (Although I was paying monthly, so it went up quite a bit.) I'm 19 now, and have just sold a Saab 9000 turbo I was smoking around in, and that cost about the same as the 16v.

Insurance companies will rip you off, that's life.

I wouldn't bother with Direct Line. They refused to insure me... and with any car, you must fit a Thatcham approved alarm/immobiliser before they will insure you for theft.

Not so. What puts up your insurance is having a high-risk car. What you need to do is look at something obscure. The first car I ever owned had a 3.5L V8 engine and was cheaper to insure than a Metro. Reason? Every 17yr old with a metro at the time wrapped it around a lamp-post, and hence even though they were only a 1.0, were expensive to insure.
Funnily enough I thought this might be the case with Peugeot 406 V6s... sadly not

Saabs and Volvos are very cheap though... because they are extremely low-risk.

How strange, I'm currently insured with Direct Liars TPF+T for my unalarmed and unimmobilised XM for a fairly reasonable price. I have got lots of no claims mind (touches wood lest something bad happen...)

Do you live in a really bad area or something?

I paid £1800-ish insurance for my 1.9D ZX which I think is the same insurance group, before I had any no claims. That was with Endsleigh just after I passed my test.

Don't get an AX, they're the same if not more than BXs to insure, same with 205s I found.

You would think soudging by the quotes but I live right out in the countryside and I believe our post code is in the lowest banding of risk?!

I am going to go direct to some insurers and see what they offer soon, i hate comparison websites!!

and yeah, I dont really want an AX or 205 or anything, great cars im sure but I just love bigger things like the BX, far more interesting and more space (I am a musician so it will be important to be able to lug a fair amount of gear around)

ill let you know how i get on when i get round to trying some insurers,
Dan

I heard recently that if you include an older named driver with a good history on a young persons policy, it actually reduces the premium...

Hello

I'm 23, but only held license for three years, and pay £140 a month for my TZD. I do live in the car insurance black hole that is Hulme in central Manchester however, so it would be less if it was a "better" area. That's with two years NCB, but with a claim against me.

At the moment I'm hunting around for something cheaper, especially as my current provider sent me a letter the other day saying they are no longer offering insurance in the UK!

Yes I believe that to be the case too. My work colleague found that with his son recently, perhaps because he still lived at home? I think it was Elephant/Admiral.

ok thats very helpful! thanks, I thought insurance comopanies were trying to close up loopholes like that so it maybe harder to come by cheaper quotes with that method by I shall give it a go as well.

I think it's only dodgy if you claim a more experienced person is the main driver. If they are only down as a named driver that's ok. But it doesn't always make a difference. For instance it doesn't cost me anything to have my dad on my policy, but it doesn't bring the cost down.

Limited mileage, garage, alarm/immobiliser, pass plus, oh & go to a specialist broker like Routen Chaplin etc..., these might get you a cheaper quote. Or the easiest solution would be to hold fire on a bx & get a pug 306 with the 1.4 engine, that'll be miles cheaper, run that for a couple of years to get your ncb up, then get a bx.

My eldest daughter (17) as principle driver with me and the missus as named drivers on a car she owns (a 1999 1.2 litre Pug 206): £631 TPFT with Premium Choice Insurance. That's with a £250 excess and parking it on public road on a largely council estate in Chelmsford Essex (with a Krooklok  )...

Doesn't seem too bad.

Bloody hell.

I used to pay that per year.

There's no reason to pay that much for insurance at age 23.
