Estate rear wing wanted.

Post by toddao »

It's the one with the filler flap on it. Right side, looking forward.

Mine has diminished after I cut back the rust yesterday. I'll have to try to bodge it for the TÜV but I'm putting feelers out now for a proper replacement if anyone's got one. Can collect early next year.
If anyone has got one and perhaps even a pair that would be even better.

Cheers
Todd

And if anyone's got two spares, I'll have the other one...
Of the two roadworthy estates, both have dents in the right hand rear wings where cretins have driven into them (one of them was my mother...).
I've got a reasonable right wing on the scrap estate (left one is rusty), but not sure how easy it's going to be to get it off in one piece.

Cheers Kev. Is that an offer or do you need it? Otherwise I'll drop by then on my next mission to the U of K armed with a drill! The critical part is at the front where it bends over the arch. That is where mine has gone.

I rode out to the local Citroen nutter this morning as I knew that he had a BX Break sitting there that bodily was intact. Normally he has haggled to the limit regarding the smallest pieces I have removed from his wrecks.
Turns out he's cleared the lot - off to the scrappers! I asked why he didn't phone me as I would have stripped them, then I realised : he's a nutter, there's no logic, especially that he kept various other rusty French hulks that I can't imagine anyone wanting.
He advised me to buy new wings! I said 'yeah, fine. From where exactly? this is 2010 not 1990.'
I don't think they are available anywhere new. Anyone know different?

I had the same problem trying to find anything when i had my TZD Estate with both rear wings holed with rot, theres nothing about.
Might sound daft but what about just buying another estate for breaking?theres been a couple on here for not much money Todd?

Yes, good idea Richard. But I'm currently negotiating to buy a complete Mk.1 TRD saloon from just over the border in France as a spares vehicle. This would be more useful really to 'save' my Break especially its complete interior. Mine is cactus.
I'm pushing it a bit to park that round the back of the 'ice cave'. One wreck at a time otherwise the father-in-law who owns the land starts getting ratty. Though despite himself he has developed a certain interest now in BXs!

I think I'll be off to the French scrappers armed with a drill soon.

I'm in France, not UK - bit far from the border though.
You don't see all that many estates here so you may struggle to find one in a breakers.

If I can get my wing off in one piece it'll be available. - the damage on the other two is probably less hassle to sort out by beating and filling than by replacing the panels. Sounds like you have the greater need! The scrap one looks ok from the outside but can't tell if it's been attacked from the rear until I get it off. That'll be sometime between now and new year – got to be before new year as I've been given a heavy deadline to get rid of the wreck (got friends coming to stay and my wife's sick of the place looking like a scrapyard, which is fair enough).
Need anything else? This was a 1987 TRS estate but I converted it to TD using virtually everything from a 1991 TZD. I'll be keeping most of the bits but if there's anything you're desperate for, let me know.

Kev, I know you're in France. That you give your location as 'Normandy' was a bit of a clue! :D I'm Sausage side over the Rhine from Alsace.

What colour is your break's interior? As I need most of the plastic boot detailing in grey. Rear struts? Though probably you'll need those too.

I was considering whether it's possible to cut out the leading edge from a normal saloon wing and weld into place, reinforced from behind?

Your wife sounds totally unreasonable! Tell her about Cadillac Ranch : 'It's art love!'

Todd, if you look at the list of vehicles you'll see she's actually pretty understanding!

I've got a fair bit of the grey plastic trim from the rear, plus I think the grey trim/carpet bit from the rear door. May still have the boot sides in grey, might not. The original interior was grey/grey tweed, and I fitted the whole TZD interior except the rear section, as the donor was a hatch not an estate. You're welcome to whatever's there in grey if you want to come and pick it up - would be a bit awkward to post.
Tailgate struts are dead if that's what you meant - suspension struts, as you say, will probably be needed.

Yes, I agree! I wasn't allowed to have any vehicles when I was growing up. I got a C-50 moped and kept it next door at the neighbours. My mum would come out and shout at me while I was working on it over the fence. The neighbour was a right salt-of-the-earth cockney and told her to piss off. That helped to influence my choice of wife! ( old vehicles and the maintenance of tolerant)

You mention that some of your rear parts are 'carpeted' Kev. Blimey, that's luxury. I've only got hard brittle plastic, hence the need for replacements. Yes, I was referring to suspension struts.

Richard, mine is a Mk.1 Break. That's why I'm struggling so hard at the moment to save it! I thought the rear wings where the same for early and late versions.
Here it is about three years ago ( Now it's spread over the floor of the 'ice cave')

Ive been looking for rear wings for my Mk1 hatch and every one has said the rear arches are more shallow lipped on the mk1 as the front arch lip is also smaller?
It was just a thought Todd as i cant remember the last time i saw a mk1 estate in the flesh?

Didn't realise yours was a Mk1 - not sure how different the trim levels were...
Pretty sure rear wings on the estates are the same early to late. Mine are all Mk 2 and they're different to Mk2 saloon rear wings - won't easily take the wider tyres for example as they don't bulge out like the saloon ones do..
