Agreed! It must be because of the fact she's a girl, we are on the policy too and where we live maybe?

She swears she'd rather walk than drive an AX so a Dyane ain't gonna happen. Neither sadly would that one owner Favorit... Shame. I quite fancy that. :D

If she'd rather walk than drive an AX, I'd spend the money on some decent shoes for her! Cor, kids are fussy these days. You often see cars for sale on Ebay with things like "bought for my son/daughter, but he/she won't drive it as it doesn't have an iPod dock" or some such.

Mind you, I think I'd make a crap parent so perhaps my kids should be glad they don't exist...

Philip Chidlow wrote:Well, Mat it will become a bit of an insurance thread - but only because the system means I can hunt down a cheap, reliable small and eco-friendly little 1.1 hatchback, for instance and it'll cost nearly three times to insure as to buy. So it's actually less about finding the right car, more about finding the lowest insurance.

Mind you, it could go horribly wrong:
Found a car that's cheapest to insure at £806.... but it's a Seat Marbella vom=

How about these then:
Renault 5 Campus (1.2) £1,027.59
Ford Fiesta 1.1 LX £1,155.85
Rover 25 1.4 £1,298.95
Rover 200 1.4 £1,391.17 (why more expensive than a 25?)
Peugeot 306 TD £1,399.65
Rover Metro 114 £1,518.37

And, getting silly: a 1994 Nissan Sunny £1,600
1991 Honda Civic £1,764

But someone mentioned a Dyane.
£865.41. Result :) (Except a. She wouldn't drive it and b. finding a good one under a couple of grand is hard).
Are those prices after your daughter has passed her test?
While my son was driving under instruction it was 1100 quid... only when it passed his driving test did it jump up to 4k

Well these prices are based upon her having passed although as yet she hasn't. Her test is probably going to happen in January. I'll obviously have to sort out the details when she has. But at least I have a good idea.

And the idea is: A 97/98 Ford Fiesta 1.25 LX. Perfect for what we want.

They have a mazda based engine so wont give much trouble there, but its a Ford, so will rot like its going out of fashion, watch the sills on these Phil! Took one in part ex (51 plate) last month, and needed welding to get through the MOT on jacking points and inner sills.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

When it comes to looking seriously for one I'll certainly take heed of that advice, Tim. thanks.

Those prices look really good Phil.

Do you reckon you're in a good area for insurance generally? Cause it made a massive difference when I moved from a supposed 'good' area to a 'bad' one.

(I'd have loved an AX or a Dyane as my first car! Had to make do with a 1.4 MK3 Golf, but that was ok really.) :D

I think the area has a lot to do with it. Chelmsford's got a low crime rate.

If I can buy a car for £550, insure it for £110 per month or so, then that's not going to be too bad. Assuming I don't continue to be as woefully short of money as I am at the moment! (Not a good time to be broke, with Xmas coming, but hey - sorry O/T)

Yeah, it was apparently the same when I lived in Stockport, but the amount of cars getting broken in to there seemed a lot higher than where I am now. Oh well, statistics eh?

I don't think being short of cash is ever O/T. :D

My first full year of insurance was on a 1.5d AX when I was 18. Fully comp with Elephant. Both parents as named drivers took the premium down from about £1500 to £900. Car was parked off road at night, and I live in the lowest risk area for crime (apparently!).

Also, I tend to disagree with the 'boy racer' cars cost more to insure. I always found it has more to do with cost of repair (VW/Audis/anything Japanese always seem expensive) and engine size. My AX GT cost less than the AX diesel did, and when swapping from a worthless Audi 80 TDI to a similarly worthless BX 16v my premium went down, even though the BX was an insurance group higher, and will do 135mph

I've managed to keep my nose clean for three years (Not so much as a curbed wheel!), and hope to do so for a while longer... It'll be nice when I can start paying three figures for car insurance again
