it does require special oil, yes. I have some which I got for mine, was a b**** to find though.

Torsen is a type of limited slip diff, not the most sophisticated type, but works to some extent. The main problem with them is the torsen properties rely heavily on the properties of the oil which degrade with time and use so after 20 odd years it wont be very limited slip if you get what I mean, it wont fall apart or anything though so not the end of the world.

Thanks, yes just more testament to citroen's ingenuity and my memory is still reliable, yes quite diff is a happy diff, and may be guilty of diverting from the topic, but educational!

I would not worry about the exhaust much.

If it cannot be welded up ,Custom stainless pipes are widely available,
or
if you have the remains of the original pipe to copy, and some standard BX GTI silencers, a system could be fabricated without much trouble.

If the transmission works, then the problem areas will be the same as for any 1990 BX GTI.

"what are the normal problem areas for a GTI?"

...Much the same as for any BX.

8V engines suffer from hard valve guide oil seals giving high oil consumption, but otherwise the engines are strong.

The normal BX problem areas: rear trailing arm bearings, rusted hydraulic pipes, rusty boot floor & inner wings, faulty ABS sensor wiring, bad electrical connections.

If the car has been stored in the dry, it will need new tyres, a cam belt and a service. But all the faults it had when it was stored won't have gone away.

Rust would be my biggest worry.

I have found all used cars to require more attention than I first anticipate though.

-this car does sound like it has potential.

IIRC the REAR diff is a regular open type. The torsen (torque sensing) refers to the mid (4WD) diff which splits the power between front and rear.

Nope, the centre diff is a standard manually lockable type, with a Torsen rear diff standard on the GTi 4x4 and optional on the estate 4x4. I think the 405 Mi16x4 had a Torsen centre diff though...

The oil for 4x4 is "Total transmission x 4". At least in Lithuania Total dealer has it in stock. 1,7l of it goes to rear diff. It must be changed every 20kkm.

In non-ABS models a limited slip rear diff was used. Torsen rear diff was used in ABS models and it is actually set of gears that multiply torque of one wheel to other thus if one wheel is in the air, the other receives 0 torque.
