Re: oil (general), I thought modern synthetic oils pretty much go black instantly and it's best to check viscosity?

It's more the fact it's a diesel - they produce more soot and any decent engine oil will hold that in suspension. You are right that the best way of determining whether oil needs changing is by analysis (viscosity/cleanliness etc.), but I think personally I'd still worry about old oil even if tested OK!

For what it costs I would change the oil and filter anyway, filters are £3 and oil is what £15?
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Sounds to me like that car needs a tempearture gauge then.
The coolent temperature gauge is the most important indicator in any liquid cooled car.
The fuel gauge being the most useful, but less important.
All the other gauges are for driver amusement, fault diagnosis, or to help you avoid speeding fines. But are not really necessary.
The temp gauge is the indicator most likely to save you from serious engine damage.
