Wanted - BIG pipe . . .
. . . like this one;
It goes from the air inlet to the filter housing on my 17TGD and is well and truly knackered. If anyone has one to sell or knows where I can buy one, any help much appreciated.

Can't you just buy a universal pipe & just cut it to the correct size? Would be a lot cheaper than the proper one that was listed on e-bay, it was waaaay to expensive tbh...

I could gaffa tape it all back up - it might do the job (?) - but look like a dogs breakfast! I think I might do that anyway until I can find a replacement.Roverman wrote:Paul have you tried reusing that one by getting some material tape and wrapping it round the lot?
edit: STOP PRESS! NT Shaw have one (I think)
' 1 Air intake pipe, to filter casing 1.7 TD(?) 95639404'
Do you think thats for a turbo diesel - and if it is what's the difference if any?

Concertina hose is widely availabe in many sizes.
IIRC that one is around 3" so something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290595861752 will do the job.
Although, it's not strictly necessary i don't think in our climate.

Thanks for that Jay. That has worried me a bit though. With the knackered pipe (which was obviously blocking the air flow) the car would have been quicker to pedal (acceleration was about 0-60 in a minute or so - I kid you not!) I removed the pipe and although the car became drivable it's still VERY slow to accelerate. Could there be a blockage somewhere - a chunk of foam from inside the pipe maybe? I couldn't see anything when I looked and I removed all the pipework back to the manifold (it is the manifold isn't it? And when I say 'I' I mean infact 'an AA man'!)

As that particular pipe is pre-filter anything lost from it would get caught by the filter itself.
As you have that pipe I am assuming yours is a 17 n/a? If so and your power losses are that dramatic i'd be looking to serious faults!
If it's a turbo (although i don't have that pipe on mine) i'd be looking in the area of lost boost, either the turbo itself or a blocked i/c.

mmm I thought that - he was the bloke with the spanners so I let him get on with it! So the lack of pipe must be why the performance is down - instead of cold air being forced in from outside there's only hot air from around the engine - it would make a difference? 'Serious faults' sounds ominous - how 'serious'JayW wrote:As that particular pipe is pre-filter anything lost from it would get caught by the filter itself.

Lack of cold air into the engine will make the car lethargic, add in an old air filter thats dirty & then you've probably nailed the problem tbh. A replacement pipe & check the air filter for grubbyness & replace if necessary, then see if that changes anything. Don't worry too much, you are used to driving your Hurricane, your 17n/a will feel quite slow in comparison. Pop it round if you like & i can have a gander for you

That answers the TD = n/a question.
I'd have to dissagree about the ambient air temperature on an n/a.
If power diminishes as the engine (and air temperature increses) your theory would be correct but as it appears to be constant and the power loss is continuous it would indicate a fault otherwise the power would still be there from cold until it warms up.
N/A's are a lot less subceptible to this phenomenon than TD's as the TD recirculates the heat building on the temperatures (hence the fitting of the i/c to lower it).
Equally, it could well just be the difference between his old TD and the step down to the n/a.

That's the one. I'm used to it being slower than the TZD and most of the power returned once I took the pipe off - but still a bit lethergic compared to how it has been. The engine starts on the nail and runs very well apart from that.JayW wrote: Is that the hose that runs to the vent on the top of the rad?
