Bit of a concern people, I have picked the car up and stopped off to fill up with fuel. When I went to start it up again the autodiagnostics lamp has come on and is staying on. I called Peter who said that it hasn't done so before and I called the mechanic who inspected it for me, he advised to drive it home (200 miles) and have someone look at it there. What do you think? I am planning to be in Colchester for the next hour or so anyway.

I doubt it'd be anything too major or it would be running badly. Probably a sensor gone down but that could affect the mixture. I'd be a bit wary about driving 200 miles in it unless I knew what the fault is.

:D ok you didnt go and put diesel in by mistake did you ?

It may be due to lack of use recently and may well clear before you head home,

Just check obvious things like oil and water before you set off.

Have a safe journey home

No I didn't put diesel in!

Just checked again and the light goes on when you first turn the key but goes out when you start it up. Drove round the block and it seems ok so feeling a bit more confident now.

Nah, I'm so over the frothing-at-the-mouth rampant feminist phase and get equally pissed off by those adverts for cleaning stuff like 'Napalm' or whatever which show men as being completely clueless - two wrongs don't make a right. I do have some boundaries though and will be sure to let you know if you ever find them ;P

Anyway, glad to hear it's just a case of getting used to the car again Jane! - travel safe, and look forward to pix when you've got 'er home and in daylight.

Easy, stick some wheels and a BX sticker on it, sling it in the boot when you go to the ICxCR, stand it next to something *really shiny* and if you leave it there long enough someone will come along and polish it.

What? I can vote now as well???!

Just arrived home, lovely smooth ride. Took a slightly longer route than usual, A14, A6, a little bit of M1 and then A50 (I hate the A50). I took my Walkman and played it through the cassette player so I had music all the way, started off from Colchester with Louis Armstrong, Mack The Knife and arrived in Stoke with The Ramones, Sheena is a Punk Rocker! Car was wonderful and have so far remembered that I don't have a clutch.
Just need to spend some time with a BXpert to advise me how to look after it properly and which little jobs I should get sorted first. I want to put in the effort with this one.

Little jobs that I know of: sunroof doesn't open, may just need a switch but may be a bigger problem, I'd like someone to have a look at the cam belt as Peter wasn't sure when it was last changed, the lights on the automatic gear lever going off intermittently (quite hard to put it in reverse in the dark when I'm not familiar with it), fuel indicator seems to be sticking a bit (will just keep it topped up well). Also I'd like some speakers in the back, I wondered about getting the ones that were on here the other day. There is a small amount of rust starting and I'd like that dealt with before it becomes a problem. I am a very amateur BX owner, my Meteor may have lasted longer if I knew more about taking care of it.

the light in the gearshift is common. hard to sort properly..
although soldering an LED in there works for me..

Cam belts look old after 5 minutes of running from new really. If in any doubt, get it done. Cheaper than a head rebuild.
Sunroof is probably seized, if you whip the plastic cover off you'll see a manual crank handle in the lid. This can be employed to gently rock the cam spindle and see if it moves freely, after you've popped the silver rod over the lug it sits on and pulled it back.
