Couple of valve shims wanted
Anyone got a couple of spair 2.5mm valve shims they don't need? Quite happy to swap for larger ones I've got spare (quite a few between 3mm and 3.5mm).

Re: Couple of valve shims wanted
Will check tonight - bang on 2.5mm? (Think they go up in 0.025mm increments).

Re: Couple of valve shims wanted
Bang on 2.5 would be ideal I think.

Re: Couple of valve shims wanted
Just been to the main dealer - and they haven't got any...
Understandable I suppose - I mean it's not as if they fit just about the most common range of engines in the country over the past 25 years or anything....
So Malcom - if you've got any 2.5s I'd be very grateful for a pair!

do you have any that are to thick, if so take them to a local machine shop as they should bwe able to machine them to the size you require, if they have a magnetic chuck that is

Thanks Malcolm - I think I'll just leave it and get a couple from my friendly engine specialist when I'm back in UK next week. Plenty of other stuff to get on with!

Re: Couple of valve shims wanted
Grind your own?? Have done the following many times and have never had a problem. 1/2" square drive long extension with a socket on the end, the socket having an internal diameter just big enough for the shim to sit in. A couple of washers and a nut, what ever is necessary to just leave the shim proud of the end of the socket. I found it better to grind a little off the end of the socket to give a flat face if the socket has a concave end which some have, it does not destroy the socket and in some cases actually makes it better as it sits better on some nuts/bolts that have a thin head.If you see what I mean.
Hold socket gently upon the flat face ( side.) of a grinding wheel and grind. Rotating the socket which gives a even grind.
Much more difficult to explain than do.
Remove and check thickness. BEWARE the shim will be b+++y hot.

Perhaps I was expecting an overdose of common sense, particularly about wearing safety goggles when grinding.2 quid on ebay. Thank you for the reminder Citronut.

Re: Couple of valve shims wanted
Presumably the grinding will knacker the case hardening though...? You'd have to remember to put the newly ground surface on the bucket side, not the valve side.

Re: Couple of valve shims wanted
Do you know that they're case hardened rather than through hardened then? Obviously if they're through hardened then grinding will have no effect on the hardness unless you get them really hot!
