Cylinder Head for 1700 Diesel Turbo WANTED

Post by ARedOne »

Hi,
After 50,000 miles the cylinder head gasket has gone....
Advice from my local garage - the head is slightly warped - so will probably go again (after 50,000 miles?) If re-fitted. Has anyone got a good condition one?
I am in Bristol, but working in Chelmsford - so either or on route would be great! !

Could it be skimmed?

Could be - but I have not a clue as to if that would cost nearly as much as a re-con!

It may be worth giving John here a call, he has a lot of stuff in his sheds including heads and camshafts etc. it is however a bit like the old fashioned breakers yard and you'll have to know what you want and probably sort it out for yourself.

I have a TD that is very ill and a spare head but I'm probably going to rebuild this but not 100% sure yet as I'm moving soon so lots going on...

I could be corrected here but it's not generally a good idea to put any spare head on without skimming the head to be 100% it's flat and checking for cracks, etc... IMO given the work getting a TD head off and on again it's worth doing it with a head you can be really confident in...

I'd always get a head checked unless I knew exactly where it came from. The last head swap I did was on a Reliant. I stripped the head as much as I could and took it to a machine shop in Stonehouse (I forget which one) which specialised in head work - they checked and skimmed it for around £25 (6 years ago).

I wouldn't skim a head as a matter of course, just in case any shallow porosity is uncovered, but it's a simple enough to check if it's required and skim if needed. The last time I had a head skimmed (nearly 4 years ago) it was also £25, and another £25 for a pressure test to make sure there were no cracks.
