WANTED: Upper speedo cable

Post by Matt H »

Needed for the new 16v, I know these are getting hard to find now, so any help muchly appreciated. Needed for the MoT!

Apparently the last one only lasted a couple of thousand miles, so I'm going to inspect - just to make sure it hasn't just popped off the speedo head... But fairly certain it has gone.

The fact it's only lasted such a short length of time suggests something more is amiss...partially seized speedo? Don't know how likely that is though.

Check out the post Ian Fearn made about getting a custom one done. Sounded pretty successful to me.

Just a sidenote, a working speedo is not an MOT requirement.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I've known a cable snap due to a seized up odometer before now. I want to try to lube this on Timex at some point as the speedo wavers as each 100 is clocked, suggesting it may be winding the cable up.

Reason for Rejection
1. Speedometer not fitted.
2. Speedometer incomplete, clearly inoperative.

How can they tell it is ''clearly inoperative'' without going for a test drive? I've never seen an examier test a speedo for operation or a VOSA examiner test a tachograph is registering.

Tachographs are,(or were) tested by a plug-in handheld instrument to make sure they register correctly and the VOSA man then signed the chart.

Kevan,
The MOT tester, tests the speedometer operation on the 'Rolling Road' at the same time as they check out the brake performance

You don't need a working speedo for the MOT.....unless you've got an extremely anal MOT tester!

On the brake rollers? I think it's one of the changes which came in this year, as it certainly wasn't tested several years back - I checked as the speedo on the 205 failed.

Without getting drawn into a debate, I've just looked on MOT.gov and it doesn't mention the speedo as a testable item.
