Wanted: BX TD

Just had a deal fall through for a BX14, I really like the idea of a BX but I'd much prefer a TD, I've got a fair bit of experience of tuning the XUD engine in pugs and love the idea of a BX with a smokey 160bhp veg burner under the bonnet!

Anyone know of any or have one they part with?

The 1.7 turbo will go bang, Doc has previous experience with this, however, if you transplant the engine for the 1.9 turbo, then you'll probably be allright :)

I have a td estate that's taxed and tested but with some engine issues... Has a spare in the boot and a spare head and tur bo too... See recent history here

Did the BX not come with the 1905cc then? Is it the 1769cc? Not much experience of those but I can see it being pretty similar. I think from memory their the same bore for the 1.8, 1.9 and 2.1 but with different stroke...

The Bx came with a normally aspirated 1.9 diesel engine, the turbo was only fitted to the 1.7 engine, so you'd have to fit a 1.9turbo from a xantia/zx etc if you wanted to tune it upto the amount of power that you've mentioned. No idea about stroke or bore tbh, perhaps the more experienced engine guy's can comment/explain?

I believe the one in the 306 would be fine :) Don't forget about the cam having to drive the hydraulic pump in a BX, so it will have to be modified to work.

That's what I was thinking of to be honest, would it just bolt on or is the head different?

the head is the same.I fitted a cam shaft to a xsara 1.9td head when I replaced the head on my bx 17.

The BX cam will fit, but bear in mind you'll need to blank off the oil feed to the vacuum pump on the head, otherwise you'll make a nasty mess...

The 1769 and 1905cc engines have the same stroke, but a different bore, so you could argue hat the smaller engine is the better for stupid boost levels as the block will be more rigid!

I'd take any 160 bhp claims with a pinch of salt though.

To be honest, I've known of a few 1.9s pull far more than that, it's a very capable engine that can take a lot of boost. I've had one myself dyno proven at 149bhp and 233lb ft with a few pump mods and 23psi on the standard KKK K14 turbo, with no internal mods at all, and with a decent intercooler, bigger turbo (TD04 is very popular, and there's a couple of people trying VNT) and maybe forged rods and a steel head gasket 180+bhp is possible :D

Don't know much about the 1.8 though, but I can't see 136cc making a huge difference...

So a BX cam in a 306 XUD9TE head should be fine? I feel a project coming on :)

Could you fit a hdi engine in a bx. Then put a ecu chip on it.
Or what about gutting a 1.9 na engine then put a turbo on it.
I must admit i do miss the bx td performance over my very basic xantia td model

Got to say. I've had 3 TZD's (1.7 Turbo) in the last 12 years and they've all been excellent. Never any problem. The first one went to a good home with 125,000 on the clock, and is still running, the second died in an accident and my current one, 217,000 miles, is still going strong. These engines are bullet-proof providing you service them regularly and will easily do a quarter of a million miles without any major problems. All the best with your search, Cheers.
