White BX 16 TGS to sell or trade for a ZX

Post by Braidy »

This is something that I've only just started mulling over so forgive the lack of pictures.

Over 4 years ago I bought my low mileage white 16TGS saloon and have since done about 30,000 miles to make just over 52,000 on the car in total. Because of the purchase of a rather special MK 1 GT that takes up the garage space I'm considering letting the 16 go in favour of a good ZX.

Body work is excellent apart from small damage around the drivers door keyhole where someone broke into the car once for the radio. No other damage was done. Paintwork is very good apart from some small flying debris marks to the front. When polished up it looks fabulous.

Bad points is pretty much limited to the parcel shelf which is pretty ropey and a bit of rust to the offside rear inner arch. It's also taking a little time to warm up these days and drive smoothly but I'm sure that's just a tuning thing and I'll sort that out if I keep it for any length of time. Servicing has been done regularly and the long exhaust bit has just been replaced. Wheels are also good and there's almost 12 months MOT.

Everything else works as it should. Oh, and it's petrol and no power steering (yes, I know, but I still love it).

So, the first question is ... has anyone got a great diesel ZX that they'd like to trade?

Definitely worth booting the TGS for, hope it finds a good home - welcome, and 'luck with the exchange :)

Tim, it's a car mate not a religion :) I wouldn't bat an eyelid putting 30k onto a MK1 if i had one :) So far i've added over 70k onto my low mileage at the time TXD, & yes it might be in slightly better cosmetic condition if i hadn't done all those miles, but i've enjoyed driving the car so bring on the miles :)

True but this is near as possible to a new MK1, once the miles start to climb it becomes just BX and the value will plummit. Youre car is a workhorse and hats off to you maintaining it so well but they have taken its toll.

Its just nice to have 1 car thats as near as possible condition wise to a new one, well to me it is.

I agree if its been purchased just for going to the car shows, but equally if turned into a daily driver, i wouldn't knock the owner, they spent the bucks as they say, so can do with it what they want, even if some of us might cringe a little, haha...

Just out of interest, how much do you think it might be worth with its current mileage?

My GT is insured for £2750 and is probably worth near to that, but thats done 50000 more miles, so i would want at least double that, as its unique.

So Tim, whats my 'newly' aquired RD worth with 50 k on the clock worth when sorted?
I reccon as a MK 1 its also pretty unique.

I agree. That GT is in museum quality condition: If it were mine it'd be a trailer tart - end of. (haha... :D )

I must say I find the idea of trailering a BX hilarious! Trailering it to what? To sit in a field. I have never trailered any road car even to proper rallies - proper competitive stage rallying and long distance serious competitive regularity events like the Tour Auto. Typically a car which has finished a Tour Auto gains in value and my GS has finished two and that is what prospective buyers want to hear. BUT 'chacun a son gout' - just forgive me for smiling!

It's a manual. Really haven't enjoyed my experiences of auto BXs.

Never expected to end up owning such an example of the marque and, to put your mind at rest Tim, it will be my other car (my BX or replacement) that will be doing all the miles. I'm well aware that it's value lies in it's very low mileage and I don't intend to lose that value quickly.

It won't be trailered anywhere though whilst in my ownership. Got to have some driving enjoyment out of it.

The term 'trailer tart' doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to actually be 'trailered' anywhere - it's a sort of euphemism for a car that's obsessively cared for due to it's pristine condition - yer know, like hyperbole or something 8)

None of my cars are trailered, but I do avoid using them in the rain, snow etc and always keep them dry, clean and well waxed. Hence why they are all pretty much rust free and should stay that way. Dont get me wrong using a BX as a daily of course is fine, but they wont last forever if you do, which again is fine, the less cars left the more valuable they become eventually;

Buy it, drive it, enjoy it, cherish it and maintain it. Cars are meant to be driven - BX or Bugatti, it doesn't matter. It's maybe like buying a bottle of wine and keeping it because it's too valuable to drink - except it's not... because once enjoyed it's still there. :)
