Free gearbox for components only.

Post by electrokid »

Re recent gearbox replacement - if the remains are any use to anyone please let me know before I chuck it out.

So... it's a BE3 gearbox that has done 216K miles in a 1.9 diesel n/a and the gear assemblies in the GB should be fine.

The diff has a failed planet wheel and the casing is cracked and there's a hole punched between GB and clutch so those are useless - only of any use to someone who may get involved in GB rebuild.

If there's no takers Brian, i wouldn't mind the 5th gear out of it for the Valver. That was the original intended purpos for the one you bought off me.

The gearbox from a naturally aspirated diesel has the same 5th gear as a 16V box - only the Turbo diesel gearbox in the BXs has the higher 5th gear needed. There are several Peugeots using the higher 5th gear and possibly a ZX...

so is there any point in doing that ?

Yes, but the mph/1000 rpm figure is a factor of both the gear and final drive ratios. It may be that the diesel 'box has a higher final drive ratio but the same 5th gear. Anyone know for sure?

The 16v and naturally aspirated diesel both use a 0.757 5th gear. The 16v has a final drive of 4.43 and the diesel 4.063. The turbo diesel's 5th gear is 0.658 with a final drive of 3.94.

The Turbo D's 5th gear reduces the revs at 70mph by about 500rpm. Using a complete NA diesel gearbox would have a similar effect effect on top gear but it would also raise 3rd and 4th gears ratios substantially which I think most drivers would not consider desirable.

I'd personally prefer to have a longer 5th gear in both my BX's, i'd like to be doing 70mph & not pulling more than 2000 revs, that would make economy on a run superb. Or have a 6 speed box, but which one's would be suitable?

The 6 speed is a lot of work with a couple of major technical obsticles to overcome on a BX, that's NOT to say it can't be done because it has.

However, it doesn't give you much in the way of lower top-end ratio, just more gears to play with.

Surely the simplest swap would be a lower FD...?

If you raise the 5th too much on a 1.9d it just wont pull as it wont have enough torque.

A 16v will certainly not be powerful enough to do 70mph at 2000rpm.

So I'm guessing the fifth from my GB isn't useful to you Jay ?

I did this exercise with the 'mg' rebuild of my Metro - did a lot of research beforehand and bought a FD pair of gears at great expense - around £150 IIRC - which then didn't fit when it was all being put together  so we had to use something else that happened to be around. But it sort of worked ok (only a 4sp box) - very long legged and very pleasant to drive but it topped out around only 104 mph and felt as though it was 'struggling unnecessarily' - I think it would have been a touch faster if I'd left the ratios alone but it was still fun.

The gearbox is now with Mike on the grounds that 1) some bits might be useful for his GB rebuild later this year and 2) if Jay still wants the 5th and it's still spare then it's closer to the West Country and with someone who has the workshop space to take it off (which I don't at the mo).
