Have you checked the strut return pipes are attached first, this is the most common problem of wet struts and very easily/cheaply fixed?

You beat me to it Kevan, welcome to the site Ben, its very rare for a strut to fail completely, the usual culprit is the strut return pipe as noted, which are about £15 and half an hour to fit.

Im Leicestershire mysellf, im not that great on tech stuff but its nice to have another local chap.

What BX do you drive?

Thanks for the advice, much apreciated!
Im hoping to get the car in the warehouse at the weekend for a good look around so fingers crossed it is the return pipe.
Only bought the car a week ago, parked at work then wouldnt start, found the ignition barrel was faulty so now has a seperate start button.
May see you around Leicestershire then Tim

Hi Ben

Im in Ashby, let me know if you need anything, this forum is essential (imo) if you want to keep a BX on the road.

Strut return pipes are still available from Citroen last time I checked.

We get together now and again for tech sessions or just general chin wags.

Yes thats true I have started to dabble with the oily bits with some success. BX's are after all quite simple cars (ignore what the great unwashed say).

I can proudly (and perhaps dangerously) say that I have never had a BX leak green blood everywhere and fail to move. I've had the odd minor leak (the TXD still has one) but (grasping at wood) I've never had one go proper leaky.

Hell, you have been lucky in your BX ownership Ian. I have had many a catastrophic leak where they have bled out in a matter of minutes but still driveable. Ime told you can drive 100 miles before the pump knackers itself. In fact ive done it on 2 occasions driving 80 miles in one case and the pump survived just fine.

I've had a front strut "let go" and the pressure is enough to blow the strut returns apart which means that you can't get it home even with some nursing. :( Even refilling with 2 new litres of LHM it pissed it straight out again onto the road! #-o
