Wanted: new distributor or vacuum advance unit for BX14

Post by jamescarruthers »

Hello.

My vacuum advance unit is knackered but I am toying with the idea of changing the whole distributor as it is probably worn due to the car having 164000 miles on.

I understand Dusullier or Bosch will fit if I change the complete unit if not I'll need the vacuum advance unit to match what is already on my car.

Guess what, I don't know which is fitted to my car as I can't see the numbers now I've put it together. Partial numbers are 25257 for definite then maybe 712 following it.

Can anyone help with identification to tell which one I have on the car or supply a new distributor with vacuum advance already in?

Make sure you keep the vacuum tube to the carb in good condition as this is v important to getting the correct timing.

Thanks for that Malcolm, I had a perished/botched tube on my last Athena and replacing it with fresh rubber (and without all the metal tube links and 90° bends!) made a significant difference to the engine running sweetly.

You usually (but not always) disconnect the vacuum tube when setting the timing, especially if a timing figure at a particular rpm is given. But a leakage in the tube will not only mean the ignition timing doesn't advance under load, it'll also give you a lean mixture.

Much simpler on my motorcycles, which apart from the Velocette (200 'Noddy') all had fully electronic ignition with the advance/retard curve built in. Some 20-30 years later and cars followed suit with individual coil/transducer units. Having fiddled with the timing settings on m/cs' I used to obtain best performance with them running very very slightly retarded from the factory ie strobe setting.
One main dealer (in Bologna with the Morini) even managed to set the timing 20° too far advanced!
As she was hitting over 105mph before they fiddled with it, I soon (after 5 miles) reset it back. They did a great job with the carbs though and fitted the correct atomiser jets, she ran ever sweeter after that.

The bad news is there is no sensible part number or reference on the reciept for the vacuum unit i have.

The good news is, when its not monsoon rain outside, i should be able to get the reference from the part itself, bear with me and i shall report back.
