BX Gt carburettor

Post by lesg »

Hi there, does anyone know where I can get a replacement carb for a Mk 1 Gt as it has failed mot on emissions and the garage are having difficulty in finding any suppliers, or does anyone have one for sale. Any info would be most appreciated as getting very frustrated at not being able to have my car on the road. Many thanks in advance of any help.

What type of carb is it? Refurb kits are definitely available for the Solex. Try Gower and Lee AFAIK they may have a suitable kit, also Kitch just used one on the same type ie 1.9GT. Check the thread on the 1.9 GT problems from Tim Leech. A lot of parts are similar if a Solex, I don't know about Weber but maybe try Contact Developments in Reading. They are excellent on Dell'Ortos but are a Weber agent too.

Note, I had aproblem with a 1.6 on emmissions and it was because someone had 'fiddled' with the carb (Solex Z1 32-34 std) They had altered the float height from 33mm to 40mm..... removed half the auto choke stuff etc etc. Real problem was the ignition module!. However if yours has not been tampered with, clean (carb cleaner and light compressed air) and replace as much as you can ie diaghrams and rubber parts as well as the gasket between upper and lower halves. If you still have an emissions problem, I would suggest the engine may be worn..... however the nominal mileage for this is certainly in excess of 200k and closer to 250k+. Light smoking is usually the valve stem seals which can be replaced in situ if you know how, or can find a good tech... Also depends on your local MOT station whether they consider this to be too bad

Morning Les,

I have a BX GT also with carb problems and am currently having it rebuilt

http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21049

It would be better to find a carb specialist to either get it set up or refurb it

Where are you based?

If it's only failing emissions, it can be adjusted. As pointed out, trying to find a replacement is tricky, though the AX GT pretty much uses the same carb just with different chokes fitted.

Personally, I think your carb needs stripping and overhauling. The difference it can make is quite dramatic.

As Kitch says getting it set up properly may help, it may respond need a good clean with carb cleaner, finding someone to adjust is the key, depending on where you are I can suggest a couple of people.

I'm currently having mine refurbished due to fault with the idle.

Seconded. BTW the emissions on my 1.6 manual were about 0.15/6 Co and the auto (originally 0.78) when I got it tested recently after only changing the plugs went down to 0.4 and THAT does need a carb strip and clean even though it runs OK'ish. I'd be surprised if the 1.9 is not pretty similar after properly setting the carb, new air filter, etc etc. Check the dizzy cap too, as they last about 25-35k before pitting a bit too much, and check the rotor arm. Note my figures are 0.xx not 1.x or 2.x and I have the print outs to support that- Souriau diagnostics.
The factory figures are closer to 1.5% Co but I've never had a BX anywhere near that. 3.5% Co is I believe the permitted max for this age of vehicle.

A good service, fresh filters and a good thrash (I would stick some redex in the tank too) could do it some good!

Thanks very much for all the great help you have given me. I have just found one online at a carb specialist and they have quoted me £68.40 for a carb which I think is great value plus it comes with a 2 year guarantee. I am based in Malvern, Worcestershire and BX specialists are as rare as hens teeth around here. Once again many thanks for your help and what a great forum it is. Les

Did you establish that the existing carb is beyond adjustment or economical repair? :?

Because..............a new carb is not usually set to work straight out of the box and will require operational adjustments following fitting.

Consequently, you will now be further away than step 1 unless the original carb has terminal defects.

Hi there, the garage where I took the car for the mot have had the car for a while and they have tried everything to tune the carb but the adjustment screws are as far as they can be used. They are going to fit the carb and set it up for me to enable the car to pass the mot. The mileage on the engine is 74000 and I have the service records to confirm this. The chap I bought it off, his father used to work for the local Citroen dealers as a mechanic, the car hasn't been used for 12 months so I had the chance to buy and put it back on the road. Hopefully the garage will get her running sweet and I can use her as my weekend drive, thanks for the input and will bear what you said in mind if the carb plays up at all. Many thanks, Les.

Hi les

My GT came from Chevron motors in Malvern and still wears it's dealer sticker with pride!

That carb sounds great value but if it's not set up properly it will be as bad as the old one.

You could try tony Weston in Gloucestershire

No, it just shows Peugeot believed in true lean burn technology (ie 14.7:1-15:1 air / petrol ratio at plug only for combustion etc) before CATs became the Euro legislation norm --- to the benefit of Johnson Mathey shareholders....check out who mined rhodium...

Mind you I'd like to find those lost horses... there in there somewhere....

Hi there, having to get the carb refurbed by the chap that I thought I was getting the new carb from. Apparently, that make of carb is non existant anywhere, so I am going down the route of a refurb where it should be as good as new. hey, who said keeping classic BX's on the road was easy. But I will not be beaten, as I seriously want this car to remain on our roads and not be broken for spares. I will keep in touch as to how it is going and thanks for the interest. Les

You can buy a new float to the carb, old one gets too heavy as it sucks gasoline and starts running rich. I ordered two pieces from Ukraine (via EBay), they are similar to a Lada Samara 1.5 carb float as it is a 1:1 copy from solex
BX 4x4 estate, several BX Van's and some more normal estates in Finland.
