What mainly defines a GTi seems to have been missed, it's not the Toybox but the responsiveness and performance of the engine which is worlds above the diesel.cavmad wrote:Almost certainly a TZD methinks. I`ve seen quite a few advertised as being a `GTi with turbo diesel engine`, which in some respects I suppose they sort of are really!

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

I'm not knocking the TZD and certainly would consider one as an estate if a good one came up but was just commenting on the "feel" of the GTi Petrol.
Near me there are traffic lights followed by a short straight and then a narrow long bridge. If you get a slow driving plonker in front as you go through the lights, you may be stuck behind him for a mile or so due to oncoming traffic. This initial short bit is usually the best chance and it still gives both shock & pleasure as the auto kicksdown into 2nd and rockets around the impediment in front and completes the manoevre before the bridge.

Ive got both, they are quite different to drive. The Gti is certainly a lot quicker, but the Tzd once the turbo is spinning does go rather well. The trouble with non-common rail old diesels, is turbo lag & non linear power delivery, which the tzd suffers from.
As an example say you boot it in 2nd, upto the red line, change to 3rd, its out of the blinkin power band & so you get a few seconds delay before the turbo starts boosting again.
The petrol doesnt have the surge of the diesel, but its so much faster to accelerate as it does have more power & a higher rev limit, so it does make overtaking easier.
However, 30mpg or 50mpg, its a toughy but thats why ive bought a Tzd instead of running the Gti. Both are excellent cars in their own right & i do enjoy the Tzd, its easier to drive once in the power band than the Gti, but for pure thrills, its the Gti i'm afraid, so gaulddd knows what the valver must be like.....
I did however when i went to the Cholmondely meet get 36mpg out of the Gti, which i thought was pretty good for that type of car considering it is 16 years old.
So, there is no comparison, both were designed for doing a specific thing, reasonably quick economical diesel, or very quick petrol with not too bad fuel economy. Both will probably get you to the same destination, minutes apart, what with all the traffic on the roads these days.
So clear as mud then....

I was taking it steady, but was still going 70 on motorways & 60 on others, so wasnt exactly dithering. Just made sure i was changing up nice & early & using the gti engine torque to do the hard work by using minimal revs & not slowing down too much to then have to speed back up.
If you drive carefully & look at the road ahead you can get quite good mileage out of most cars, except my mini which only does 30mpg on a good day, most of the time its about 25mpg. But i wouldnt swap that car for anything else, including the BX.
