Here is my predicament - SWMBO does not like the BX and is keen for me to get rid of it and use the money towards the house. I feel certain that any money I get for it (not that I want to sell it at all) would be relatively small so it wouldn't be worth bothering with.
I was hoping someone would be able to give me an idea of the value so I could advertise it for higher than that - then when it doesn't sell I can use that as a justification that no-one wants it thefore I would be better keeping it.
I have written an advert (below) but I don't think I could bring myself to part with it (unless someone makes me a daft offer of...say £5000!!!)
For Sale
BX TZD Turbo Estate
Good Points:
146k miles with almost complete service history (it has the first 70,000 and the last 50,000)
Oil changes every 5k miles/ air & fuel filter every 10k miles during my ownership (50k)
Front hinges welded
Fully rust proofed with Dinitrol
Twin electric mirrors
Superb interior – no signs of wear
Citroen rubber floor mats
Intact glovebox
Electric windows all round, with one-touch drivers electric window
16v dash with working oil pressure, oil temperature and water temperature gauges
16v steering wheel modified to inhibit the self cancelling indicators (original available which still self cancels)
Good oil pressure (minimum 4 bar when idling hot)
Set of genuine Citroen roof bars
16v alloys with a set of matched Firestone tyres (one only covered 3k miles)
Genuine Citroen towbar with working twin electrics (uses all mounting points rather than the 2 rearmost ones!)
Working air con
6 weeks MOT but will have new MOT on sale (it has passed last 2 MOTs with no work required and am confident it will pass again)
Recent new parts include:
Genuine Citroen tacho flywheel sensor
Genuine Citroen heavy duty alternator (cost £250!!!)
2x rear struts and rear pipes
2x rear swingarm bearings
Air con condenser & receiver/dryer (+ 1 pipe)
Bendix 16v vented discs and pads with reconditioned callipers (front)
New heavy duty fan transistor
New octopus
LHM change – filters cleaned and system flushed with Hydraurincage.
Bosal front exhaust section (still under guarantee)
Will have new front strut return pipes as they look a little perished.
It comes with the following spares:
Radiator (2nd hand)
Headlight (2nd hand)
Indicator (2nd hand)
Various switches (2nd hand)
Front struts (2nd hand)
Fuel gauge sender unit (2nd hand)
Jack (2nd hand)
5 original wheels/tyres (3 hardly worn Firestone)
Boot floor rear plastic trim
Rear exhaust section (new gen. Citroen)
Rear brake discs (new gen. Citroen)
Fuel cut-off solenoid (new)
Bad Points
Dent on N/S/R door (paint not broken)
Evidence of respray on N/S doors (suspect a scrape)
N/S parcel shelf peg broken off (not a problem when rear seats are up)
Front struts getting stiff (I had planned to rebuild the spare ones I had) [/b]

Not that im a expert I would expect it to fetch somewhere between £500-£600 max if its MOT'ed roadworthy and tidy.? Anything more than that is Xantia territory, and im not saying they are a better or worse car then the BX but they are a newer car.

The problem is that you've written a very good advert for the car, which will give you a fair bit of interest..... I'm thinking of making you an offer for it and ditching my 405s
If you actually want to hold on to the car, you need to write a rubbish advert for it, and overprice it. A swift look through eBay will undoubtedly yield many badly written adverts as a guide.
Something like:
Citreon bx. tax and mot drives nice some new parts. must sell it's too old now. has some spare parts with it. £1300
Would you buy that car? I certainly wouldn't.
...and hey presto, you keep your car.
this might be a signature

For a TZD Estate in good nick, 500 is low. Ordinary TZD hatches make that. With aircon in working order, never less than £800. £1000 isn't fanciful in fact and for that car there would probably be a taker at that figure. £1500 should scare folk off.

IF you can get £1000 for it then hats off to you but I do think you will struggle, us bxers see the TZD estate for what it is a powerful economical load lugger but to the unenlightened its just a old car with alot of miles on the clock.
Good luck with the sale, even if you do sell it for say £800? then you have to find something as good for £800, there in lies the problem.

Blimey, with that ad I want it myself!
David's right, you need to create a much more rubbish ad.
OR:
No.4 coal shovel
back of the head
Roll of carpet
Disposal area of your choice
This is why I still have all my junk, no woman and the mendips are full up!!

Thanks for the replies, I must admit I wrote the ad a while ago when I
was actually considering selling it. I can see that in monetary terms, even with the specification and condition it isn’t worth all that much but with all the time I have spent on it (and under it!), to me it has a higher value that 99% of people are willing to pay.
I think that potential buyers would fall into 2 groups; those after a good BX, who may well be willing to pay £800+, and those after a 'car' who most certainly wouldn't. Better not advertise it on here then!
Of course the other solution is for me to stand my ground

I'd say £600-£800 if the AC is fully functional. If you get a BX fan, they'll be willing to stump up the extra for a car with AC, but pretty much everybody else just won't care.
Its an advantage that its an estate, although in fairness anyone who wasn't a BX fan (which is 90% of the UK population) would buy something newer as a workhorse.
Personally I'd stand your ground. I've never got this SWMBO thing.....in my own relationship neither of us would stand in the way of anything that makes the other one happy. The only thing she won't let me do is sell my BX because she knows I'd regret it later

My point exactly, and being red, the ultimate style icon (as I may have mentioned). Owners invariably have beautiful girlfriends and charmed existences. Try that on the missus, Matt.

Just tell her that if u sell your prized motor she will only end up having to put up with your constant moaning in every other car that u r in comparing it to your BX. So which would she prefer???
Stand your ground, tell her if the car goes, then so do you
