Nice honest looking car, I had one of these and found it to be a great motorway car.

8 or 16v?

Post by David McMahon »

Can you tell if it's a 8v or 16v? It's about an hour from me so if it's a 16v it looks good!

Only the 8 valves mate.
Although you could put another engine in the boot, then it would be a 16 valve!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

I've thought about it yes, but I haven't done it....yet.
It wouldn't be much of an engineering project though.

I did try and talk dad into having one, but he seems happy with the 8V auto.

TBH I like the BE3 in the valver, but if I ever have problems longterm with the left leg, then YGX will have a autobox in it.

As Tim, Ian and Billy - and others - will testify, the GTi auto is a fine car, a comfortable blend of performance and refinement, so long as you can put up with the 20-34mpg economy range. A GTi of this age will smoke a bit and as has been pointed out elsewhere, BXs are starting to really show their age now (rust in particular is now present in ever increasing quantity)...

BUT.

I am sorely tempted...

Unfortunately having just blown another £300 on the Toyota (having now virtually replaced the whole drivetrain) with Xmas coming up (with a trip to Thailand before that) I am really going to have to pull out all the stops persuasion-wise with the good lady....

Definately Phil. I loved mine and it was great to drive and would have another one no problem.

Missed the end of the auction. Wish I hadn't now - went for £258.

16V auto.

Post by Geoffrey Gould »

Hello
I did try and talk dad into having one, but he seems happy with the 8V auto.
well the only thing that stopped me was the fact that I thought that the box would have a very exciting and very very short life. Also that I didnt think that Chris would want to do another auto job just yet, having work stacked up for about the next year, and thats only BX's. Losing my licence had something to do with it also.
Now a 1-7 td with 125 bhp auto yes I would go with that, but the problem would be an auto box that would stand it.
Cheers.
Geoff.
