Breaking XM

Post by Terry »

I've got an N plate XM 2.0ltr turbo Executive with gas conversion which I'm going to be breaking in the next few days.

If anyone wants any XM bits please PM me.

Can sit on them for a while if anyone can't take delivery soon.

Yes.

I would very much like the Gas kit as it's suitable for a turbo engine. Do you know what type it is, and what type of tank it has? Also, how clever are the electronics to swap from petrol to gas? Do you know if it alters the timing too?

David, it's black dark out here right now, so I can't go and have a look.

I've got some paperwork from the installer, who is the fella I bought it off. I'll look it out tomorrow when I get back from seeing David, DLM,

I can tell you it's got a 100 litre tank

Hmmm, what have you got planned then?

I hope it's not for the aeroplane!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Gas for either my Turbo-converted Fiat X1/9, or a friend's CX GTi Turbo 2. I also want to see how this kit copes with a turbocharged engine as the only way I've seen it possible to gas convert one so far is with a liquid-phase injection kit.

The generic instructions that came with my kit (single point mixer ring system) did mention how to fit it to a turbocharged engine. Whether that is advisable or not is a completely different matter. I'll see if I can dig them out.

Is the X1/9 using the original (1.5 litre?) engine? Compression ratios aside.

I might possibly have nicked the engine from a Fiat Uno Turbo. It might also possibly be being bored out to just over 1500cc. There's also a mild chance that it will be running very high boost to make best use of LPG's 120 octane. I might possibly be expecting over 200hp.

Maybe.

So will you be running it on gas only to prevent detonation? Or do you reckon off boost at idle you will be able to get it to run on petrol? I would imagine that the reason most, if not all, gas kits start on petrol is to avoid the complication (and cost) of a cold start enrichment system but I suppose that can be worked around...I can't see any reason why a mappable ECU (eg Megasquirt) designed for petrol couldn't look after a suitable LPG system.

Sounds like an interesting project, best of luck!

Exactly my thoughts. I also expect to be able to have different maximum levels of boost depending on whether it's running on LPG or Petrol, and different ignition mapping too.

David, I'm still trying to find the paperwork here.

I can remember it's a single point system and I didn't get any instructions for fitting it all to another vehicle.

On the second filing cabinet now... will keep you posted.
