WANTED BX Diesel with Aircon (thinking ahead for once :>)

Post by combwork »

I used to own a TZD, then in succession an XM V6 Estate, a Fiat Multipla, another Fiat Multipla then a single epilectic fit last January put me off the road for 12 months. With luck I'll get my licence back in Jan 2009 and what I'm looking for now is a TZD (prefferably Estate) with air conditioning. I know the 16 valve was occasionally factory fitted with air conditioning but I don't know if the TZD was. Does anyone know if it was? Has anyone seen one? Does anyone know of one for sale? If the price was right I'd arrange pickup now and stash it until January next year If possible, an email to Jim at wait49@aol.com would be appreciated as I'm not always here...............Many Thanks, Jim.

PS. Sorry about the spelling; I cannot find a spell checker

Hi Jim and wlecome to the bxclub, TZD turbo estates do show up from time to time and I know a few members have retro fitted A/C to their cars, I dont remember seeing a TZD with factory fit but it was on the options list so there maybe one out there somewhere!

Good luck.

I have owned a TZD with factory A/C, although it was a saloon. There has also been a 1.9D estate on ebay a while back with factory A/C. Other than the massive cost when the car was new, there's no reason why a TZD Turbo estate would not be available with A/C

Seems logical that this would be the case but some availability seems down to the whim of the marketing dept at the time.
For instance the fitment grid in car brochures often show at the intersect point whether it is Std, Optional or not available. As the model years advance the permitted options available and also the things fitted as standard usually improve.
If for whatever reason it was not available then, it would have required a co-operative salesman/showroom/manufacturer and a long wait for the car to come through the factory/distribution process as there would be nothing already in the pipeline with this option.

... also, given that Stu's TZD turbo is in fact an "aircon" shell (it has the required holes in the bulkhead) there's absolutely no reason this car shouldn't exist somewhere.

Thanks David,

It's good to know that in one form or another, the things are out there. I found an add on the net (maybe old) for a 16 valve with aircon "in need of some mechanical work but running" down South for 'around £300'. It's very high milage, and the doubt and uncertainity cast by "some mechanical work" plus problems of getting it up here make it a bit of an impossible project. What happened to your TZD saloon with aircon? An Estate is ideal but there's nothing wrong with a TZD saloon.

It is a lot of work finding a TZD estate in good nick and a lot more finding a viable aircon rig. Much more still fitting and debugging it and then you have to run a BX with poor spares availability. Give up and buy a Xantia. Unless you already have a good BX (A bad one is the waste of an aircon rig), you are wasting your time and will end up wishing that you had not started.

What spares do you find difficult to get hold of? I'm just asking as I have yet to experience a problem obtaining the spares I have required. Obviously with more modern cars there will be more places around that have the spares on the shelf, but I wouldn't say that (IMO) vital spares are hard to get hold of yet.

I'm sure your last statement will provoke a reaction...although personally I think that if you want a BX, go for one - if you can find the right one. ^^bx>

Possibly said tongue in cheek, or possibly said with an element of realism. Air con BX's are rare, Air con TZD Turbos are rarer than rare, Factory fit Air Con TZD Turbos are rarer than a French Beef burger, TZD Turbo estates with working air con in RHD with no serious rot in teh body are rarer than hens teeth.

Home grown examples are possible, remember Tom did this so does know what he is talking about in the headaches encountered, my own TZD saloon with air was never quite right and the belt squealed like a stuck pig no matter how tight the tension was. One of the things that ultimatly put me off the TZD-T and sell it on.

Xantia estates in both 1900TD and 2000HDi examples with air con, are much more plentiful, and its likely you can pick one up in better condition and in the short term at least for aless money than a BX TZD Turbo Estate With Air Con.

Mind you - dont let me put you off, either keep searching for the holy grail of BX's (on an L or M plate) or buy a decent estate and graft in an AC unit from a valver.

I'm sure you are right about the ease of finding a Xantia, I can only remember 2 TZD turbo estates on Ebay over the last 4 years, neither of them working! I was fortunate enough to find a spares car with factory fit air con (not working) which was cosmetically and structurally poor. With lots of help from Tom and AlanS, 3 solid weekends and numerous evenings of work and about £250 (for a new condensor, receiver drier and re-gassing) I managed to transfer the set up and get it working.

And no, I'm not selling! But good luck in finding one, you might get lucky...

Thank you everyone for the helpful replies. It's good to know that TZDs with aircon do turn up very occasionally, but that the aircon unit will probably need a full rebuild. Food for thought............... I appreciate that the Xantia might be a more 'sensible' choice, but I like the looks of the TZD. Ideally, I'd like a manual 2.5 TD XM with full climate control but although it's a great looking car, the XM really does demand specialist attention; I tried and failed to keep my V6 'Exclusive' Estate in good order. On the other hand, the TZD is just about maintainable, although the flow distributer with its two sealed in filters must be about as daft a bit of engineering I can think of. My eldest daughter learned to drive on a TZD; intermittant power steering taught her early on how to deal with the unexpected. My youngest daughter will be 17 next year; getting a good TZD would be no bad idea. Maybe I'll have to put aircon on the `wish' rather than `want' list,

If you're looking for a long-term BX, then I'd make a decent estate bodyshell the first priority, almost regardless of engine, or else go for an estate that can be successfully given the new sills treatment without too much other work (lots of BX estates have disintegrating sills now). Hatches have disintegrating rear valances and boot floors in many cases, unless given substantial repair work. Wish I knew what had happened to the triton-green TD hatch I sold through this forum once - that lovely car had been given a complete new rear-end valance and floor through the previous owner's insurance after a rear-end collision. About as rot-free as a hatch BX can get in that area.

If it's an aircon-compatible bodyshell, then you have that option should a transplant aircon unit turn up. 1700 TD engines are getting a little thin on the ground, though a Peugeot/Rover transplant is always a possibility so long as you can get hold of the pump pulley and other ancilliaries to convert to a properly intercooled and hydraulic setup (there's no intercooling on 309 1.7 turbodiesels, for example).

I've also lusted after an XM TD estate for a long time, whether 2.1 or 2.5. and have seen the odd example that seems to justify keeping a look-out for them. However, reason has always reared its head in time to keep me from going that route, especially as some seem to end up in unsympathetic ownership. Did have a look at a nice not-for-sale example recently whose owner was seeking spheres at, of all places, the partists formerly known as Unipart. There was a part-exed blue 2.5D estate at a garage between Bournemouth and Poole a few weeks ago, but probably long gone now.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

It's very easy to make ANY BX shell an air shell mate.

You only have to actually cut 4 holes in any shell to add air, the two big un's for the recirculaters, the drain below the heater box and a hole in the bulkhead for the pipe's.

Even non air shells have the moulding in the bulkhead for the recirculaters, the only difference is the air shell had the holes cut out and plates stuck over them.

I have both, the valver has an air ready shell, and I have a valver A/C kit, so obviousley I'm going to fit the kit in the non air TD!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...
