Dykes that used to be footwells

Post by saintjamesy89 »

I have sprung two dykes  in the place where my rear footwells used to be... Anyone got any tips for drying the carpets? My car steams up every time it gets cold or if the windows are closed... And with it being bloody cold and wet atm, and the car is only used on fridays and weekends usually it is a bit difficult...

The reason is my electric sunroof's seal isn't very sealing on the rear side of the sunroof, and it doesn't rest in the right place anyway so you have to bugger around with the (sticky) switch till it's level with the roof outside.

Seal the sunroof up with waterproof silicon sealant, or such like

TBH, the sunroof itself never actually offers much of a seal, the water simply passes the seal and exits the drain tubes. So, it's more likely your tubes are blocked

As for draining the footwells, All i did was release the carpet from the door/sill trim and the rear seat squab anchor points, peel it back, remove the 2 large gromits from the floor to drain. I'd then take the parcel shelf out & stand a fan heater in the boot and leave the bugger plugged in for a couple of days (they're all thermostatically controlled), just leave a front window open a crack for the moisture to escape.

Then as Scarecrow says, seal the sunroof up until you get round to sorting it properly (gaffer tape's a good one).
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Don't forget the BX sunroof was not designed to be watertight as such. There are drain tubes in each corner. Do a search on this site; there lots of chat about them. Clear the tubes, let them drain away the water as they're supposed to do and, unless the sunroof tray itself/seal around the glass is letting water through, it'll probably do the trick. If not, then try sealing it up.

Have you also checked the windscreen seal and door rubbers?

Thanks for the replies chaps, I will check them tubes!

The windscreen appears fine, there isn't any wet-ness in the front, and door rubbers are very good for the cars age. I'd rather not seal the sunroof, its nice having some quiet fresh air circulation on the move!

you will find the two rear drain tube tail ends in behind the rear light units, and the fronts are inside the bottom of the A panle and accessed from inside and behind the front foot well side trims,

once you find locate them blast them out with compresed air, but firstly cover the seats with a dust sheet,

some people say shuve wire up them, but i think you risk damaging the tubes this way,

Apologies for bringing back an old thread.

My rear footwells are a bit damp, but I have no sunroof. Err, so.

Door seal is probably the culprit then.

Pesky door seals. I'll take a look. Both sides though, that's bad luck even for me!

Cheers.

My door seals were not up to their best started to dry and shrivel used some silicone spray[not sealent] worked a treat don't buy at halfrauds though cheaper at factors or autojumbles.
