Well it never made it to the MOT! Its thrown a paddy and has started blowing a fuse, teh fuse that controls the windows horn dahslights and wipers keeps blowing. Ive replaced it twice but keeps blowing, i found a loose earth strap on the battery and tightened that but still no good!
Electrical maledies a right royal pain in the dong.
Process of elimination Tim - does any one thing seem to make it go POP?
ie using Horn, indicators, just ahving dash bulbs on? Blower?
Otherwise its out with the multimeter and probe to check continuity - I would think a likely culprit would be the windows - where the wire passes through the door.
Failing that - replace fuse with a paper clip and see what starts to smoke - thats likely to be your culprit.

Better to replace the fuse with a 12v bulb with your multimeter wired across it and set to 12vdc and then shake/move all lines, fittings or components and see if you get a reading. If alls well voltage reading should be zero or low (bulb is likely to glow depending on circuits switched)
If the meter reads the full 12v when you are moving something and the bulb lights bright then you have likely located the site of the short-circuit.
I was driving a Cortina once where my tool box in the boot bit into and grounded the rearscreen heater wire that was fed from under the dash and through the roof space. The car filled with acrid smoke; I couldn't see or breathe and I still had to stop from 40mph.

The horn, dashlamps, elec windows and wipers are all running from a 25 amp fuse which I have located, using any of these makes it pop! I tried it with a 30amp and it did the same again! Bugger!
Im no good with electrics so will have to get work to look at it, the bills creeping up so It may be a case of give up before It gets too expensive! Plus the end of the drivers sill is rotten.!

Don't give up Tim! Choose the best, most salvageable - the one you really WANT, and pass the others on... I hazard a guess that it's the 16v that deserves your full attention. If one BX isn't enough, you can always pick up a minter from Ian when he wants a change!

You just have to work methodically through the problem Tim, try my advice as posted above. Our cars are all past their manufacturers intended lifetime and unless ,as we do, put our own labours into maintaining them then they would soon go beyond economical repair.
The advice and moral support on this BXClub is fantastic which allows you to venture where others would fear to tread. I have been in sales for many years and know most salesman do not like to get their hands dirty! If you want to run BX's you will have to, otherwise either be prepared to throw huge sums at the car or give up.
(You have been brave to buy a 20 year old car- surely you expected problems to sort?)
