Splitter removal and headlights
Splitter removal and headlights
How is the splitter attached to the front bumper ? and I'm looking at getting some new headlights as the reflective surface inside the current ones looks tired, but I've been looking on ebay and just wondering is there is any difference between Valeo and Lucas lamps.
Cheers

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
Dunno about headlamp differences but would imagine Valeo to be the OE manufacturers.
Front splitter is stapled(!) on if it's an original fitment.

Stapled ?!
I think it might be an original fitment for TZDs, hmmm kinda hoped its was maybe a couple of torx screws or something.

Yep, stapled with great big staples that don't want to move. I think you can drill it and use screws to replace though - makes it much easier.TizzyD wrote:Stapled ?!

And that stab you in the thumb when you try and remove them. Despite mine being the considerably more stylish estate version of the TZD Turbo, it didn't seem to have one as standard so I just screwed it on with a few self tappers.Paul296 wrote:stapled with great big staples that don't want to move.

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
The Lucas one I have actually looks brighter through the glass, but that could be because it's 'younger' than the Valeo I'm comparing it to. Also, the beam pattern is different, not that I noticed the difference when driving but it looks different as you look at the car.
The other thing to do if you are so inclined is to prize off the glass and stick on aluminium tape where the chrome has faded.

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
First thing I do on any new BX I get is to fit a new set of headlamps as it really "freshens it up" as the lamps make up such a large part of the cars nose.
I normally stick to valeo as they are OE but have fitted lucas before with no issues, you can mix and match and noone would notice, but one new one and a tired old one look odd.
I guess its down to the purchase price, I ve paid £10 each (from eBay) for new Valeo ones in the past and some jokers want over £50!

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
My TZD turbo estate certainly has one, dont know if they were standard on them though. Is it malcolm who was doing the taking of money at stratford? He seemed to think not, although im not sure.

I take it that your referring to if a 'Splitter' being fitted as O/E to TZD Turbo Estates ?
The answer is NO, your Red Estate has a bumper/splitter from a White TZD Turbo hatchback that I broke up, which I supplied to 'citro-geoff' to replace the damaged one after his neighbours son-in-law reversed into when he owned it !
Here's what it looked like (after the collision) :-

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
Due to the rather less regular shape of the BX headlight I do not know if this will work. It certainly sorts out tired round units and regular rectangular units. I have off cuts of a polymetalic insulation material used in cryostats, as in imaging magnets. A similar lower spec material can be bought to go behind radiators and the like. The surface is very reflective, more so than old headlamp silvering technology. It does not stretch and tends to crease so a paper template of best fit made first is best. Then the new reflector made up and inserted glued in place with that evil black Bostik stuff . The result is a dazzled MOT man .BX Bandit wrote:The other thing to do if you are so inclined is to prize off the glass and stick on aluminium tape where the chrome has faded.

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
yes splitter is stapled with about 30 of em best to get a good pair of snips to them and pull them out just so, i refitted mine with small self tappers about 12 or so, u should be able to pick up some new headlights off the bay for peanuts not o/e but does make a big difference, a i did on my tgd think i paid £45 for a pair new. i will be shopping for some myself soon as the tzd lamps are very faded,

Re: Splitter removal and headlights
I've only done it when he glass falls out, which is more common than you might think. It's normally only the part above the bulb that peels and even then I'm not convinced there is meant to be reflective stuff all over as there is always the same pattern of reflective stuff missing. But yeah, it's not as shiney as the 'chrome'Thread Bear wrote:Due to the rather less regular shape of the BX headlight I do not know if this will work. I think the valeo one's are a slightly better quality of finish than lucas one's, but there's not much in it imho. I've not noticed if the beam pattern is slightly different or not, i'll have a looksey one evening.
