Nice Towbar
Hi guys
I'm going to fit a towbar to the tzi so I can pull the 89 marauder with it.
The genuine Citroen ones are big heavy things and a bit ugly. Do they do removal ones? Twin electrics preferred. Ideally I'd like one where the bar is hidden and just the hitch is visible.

Re: Nice Towbar
Hi Tim, ive had several different types of towbars fitted on my bx's, none of which were good looking all a bit bulky heavy old bits of metal, not sure there is a tuckaway type available and im sure with the genuine Citroen fitment you lose the capacity to store the spare wheel underneath, i was also advised (by an mot tester who said it no longer complies) that towbars now have to attach to the chassis rails not just to the towing eye brackets as mine did. Estate/hatch are not the same bars.

Re: Nice Towbar
The genuine towbars are fine AND DO allow the spare wheel to be in place and useable at least on a hatch!. My 'genuine' towbar is on it's 3rd BX now and would fit on another if needed, along with plug in wiring socket.....
I doubt a fold away and under type would allow for the spare wheel or the plug in and twist n' lock type either.
You are correct in that the genuine bars do attach to the two chassis rails at the forward end, if mounting one of these please do use a substantail piece of timber to act as a spreader to let you get it aligned wit the bolt holes.
From seeing some of the alternative style bars, I'm not sure they area any neater than the genuine tbh.
Why do you need twin electric? is one just to power the caravan interior? You can put a splitter in line with the take off feed anyway with one line to the tail lights etc and the other end as long as you wish taped or clipped to the primary line. Might be worth upping the fuse on the lighting side, if I remember right it is a 5 amp but I know I upped mine to 7.5 after a while and too many bulb failures. Did not seem to hurt anything ie no overheating. Mind you I only pull small trailers with boats on mainly.

Re: Nice Towbar
And on the estate as well. I have two - one's a genuine type (whether it's genuine Citroen or Witter or whatever I don't know. The other looks rather home-made, and started life as a hatch one that I extended about 15 years ago and it's done a lot of towing since with no problems. Neither are very pretty, although the home-made looking one is actually more unobtrusive.Tinkley wrote:The genuine towbars are fine AND DO allow the spare wheel to be in place and useable at least on a hatch!.

Re: Nice Towbar
Hi Tim, if you happen to get offered two, please keep me in mind It's something I'll be looking for later as I have a lightweight trailer tent that I tow behind the Imp and would like the option of using it behind the BX too!

Re: Nice Towbar
I have a spare towbar for a hatch if anyone needs one. Can bring it back to UK when I'm back in a couple of weeks' time...

Re: Nice Towbar
A very sturdy looking contraption that but not for me sorry.
There's some nice ones on ebay, but they aren't cheap.

Re: Nice Towbar
I have a genuine one for sale. Possibly two actually, as I doubt I'll ever need to pull anything with the 16v. Will attempt to get my arse in gear and take some pictures later (not 100% sure I still have the second one but I'll find out).

Re: Nice Towbar
The OE one is primarily two large diameter tubes which wrap around the spare to mount on the chassis rails. Plus the two rear side mount bolts on small flanges, they're not too obtrusive IMHO. You only see the two tubes and the towbar mount plate plus lighting/wiring socket.
You can always get them grit blasted and coated as they are not piss thin steel.
