Brake calipers
Brake calipers
My car is currently off the road at the moment but something I wanted to do is give the pad carrier a spruce up with a wire wheel and a lick of paint (not red don't worry) I am right in thinking its only these two bolts holding it on without having to disconnect anything ?
Also the sliders could do with new dust covers and re-greasing as I'm sure one might be dragging so I'm looking at these on eBay but the Haynes I have doesn't elaborate on changing the sliders very well - is it a straight forward job ? I have noticed my car only has one brake vent on the O/S front brake I'm guessing it should have one on the N/S as well ?

Re: Brake callipers
Yes those 2 bolts will remove the carrier frame without disconnecting anything else.
Changing the sliders and rubbers is straight forward depending on the condition of the grooves that hold the rubber seals in. The old rubber seals may appear stuck in but they are not. They are held into location groves by the sliding pin so you have to remove the pin then remove the rubber seal out of the groove but it often is stuck solid and needs to be dug out and the groove cleaned out properly but sometimes the grove is damaged/corroded and it can be hard to locate the new seals in the groves properly. Once he seals are in the location groves inserting the slider pin in then holds the seal in the groove. Very straight forward on paper but can be very fiddly in practise.
Yes both calipers should have the cooling diverter but no real harm done if they are not there.

Re: Brake callipers
Thanks for the response, just one question, how do you actually remove the sliding pin though ?
And its nice to not have to worry about only having one cooling diverter

Re: Brake callipers
Once you've taken the caliper off by undoing the two bolts that go through the sliders they just push out but if yours are seizing you may have to knock them out with a hammer and punch.

Re: Brake callipers
p,s. use a dab of loktite on each bolt when reassembling.

Re: Brake calipers
You might find the plastic diverter has in fact broken leaving a bit under the retaining bolts....
The other bit that goes missing in this area is the heat shield around the steering ball joint.....

Re: Brake calipers
I haven't seen any missing heat shields but I'll have a look next time I've got the wheels off
May try and get a diverter so that I can re-fit it as it should be even if its not essential for when I get round to doing the job

Nicer weather for playing with the car is here so I need to get on with this job, what type of loktite should I use ?Defender110 wrote:p,s. use a dab of loktite on each bolt when reassembling.

Re: Brake calipers
Make sure you've got the right socket for the bolts (look closely and count the flats...)
Re: Brake calipers
Picked up this off eBay for £8 with free P&P the other week in anticipation of this job and not wanting to round off the bolts

Re: Brake calipers
I did a double take when I first tried - tried a few standard sockets and nothing would fit! Then I looked closely...
Re: Brake calipers
Im more scared of snapping the bolt head off after 20+ years of heat cycles and what not but while I've got the carrier brackets off I might also give the brakes a bleed (again risky for the bleed nip I know) as they seem a bit spongey
Re: Brake calipers
I did the same thing. Eventually I just painted them on the rest of the caliper.mat_fenwick wrote:I did a double take when I first tried - tried a few standard sockets and nothing would fit! Then I looked closely...

Re: Brake calipers
Bump....
Never actually got round to doing this job but I'm going to need to change discs and pads soon so I might as well give the sliders the re-grease I should've done a while ago and give the pad carriers a spruce up with a wire wheel and a lick of heat proof paint.
I've found slider kits online that have the rubber boots and new slider pins in but I'm still in the dark as to how to remove the sliders... Do they just push in and out (if they aren't seized) if so do I push them inwards (wheel side) towards the engine bay and out the back of the caliper or the other way round and push them outwards from the engine bay side of the caliper towards the wheel and out the front of the caliper ?
