I'm bloomin useless :(
I'm trying to get my Gti back on the road, so have got all the parts now that i need in order to do the main jobs such as cambelt & rear arm bearings. I've even bought some alloys & have just ordered some tyres (gulp, how much have i spent????)
Only trouble is, i dont have a clue as to go about these jobs & i'm fed up paying stealers their overinflated rates (plus i've now got no money left). This is bit of a big ask, but is anyone able to help me in time for the national? I am willing to pay of course. Any help would be gratefully received.
I would've been prepared to drive to anywhere in the country to get this sorted, but the cambelt (after inspecting the paperwork) is overdue by about 3k & i just dont want to risk it, so the car is on my drive & wont be moving.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks

Derbyshire is a fair trek from here, BUT, I will be heading to Liverpool to sort Vanny's valver out the first week in July. I should be able to swing by on the way back to civilisation (assuming I dont get shot dead or sold into slavery whilst in Liverpool of course! ) if thats any use to you mate?
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Right you are mate, actually I'll be spending a couple of days up north with young vanny very soon, so maybe we can both come and bugger your car up!

the rate its going you'll be sleeping in a different house!
Funny i'm sure i made exactly this suggestion in the wee small hours of the morning!
Mulley, get some paper and a pen and go round the car and make a list of EVERYTHING you want to sort on it no matter how small, keep going out there and making the list, you'll find things you missed everytime, then post on here! We might not get everything done, but you'd be surprised.

Here is my list in order of importance?
1). Cambelt
2). Cambelt tensioner
3). Rear arm bearings, both sides i'm assuming.
4). Engine Waterpump
5). Alternator Belt
6). HP Pump belt
7). Bottom engine mount (comes as a disc part only)
8.). Fan blows hot air only (is this likely to be seized cables?) i havent bought any parts for this yet, but can do on your advice.
9). Oil & Oil filter change - i reckon i can do that (already changed the air filter element).
10). Right hand strut change (i have 2 spare struts) - i can do that but may not have the small spanner required to remove the lhm pipe from the top of the strut mount. (I may need a new return pipe, whereabouts can i get hold of one of those from?)
Er, not much eh

You dont need an 8mm spanner to remove the pipe. Leave the pipe attached, undo the 36mm nut on the top of the strut, push the strut down. Viola, job done!

Ken, it will be priceless
I think you guys are getting my TZD confused with my Gti, but both need an engine mount, the Gti due to age i guess & the TZD because of the oil contamination caused by the number of blinkin oil leaks it had, now mostly sorted by Ken, so hopefully it should last longer than the last one???? It does appear to be dropping less oil than before, so still got some oil coming from somewhere?
I guess all these sound like a lot, & i could have not bothered with a number of the jobs, but it would appear to be a false economy by not doing them so once done, they wont need doing for years & i plan on keeping the car so it will be well worth it. I reckon most cars of a certain age need all this doing to them, she's still got a valid mot, so thats a positive .
Most normal people (not citroen enthusiasts) would just drive the car as is & wait for the cambelt to go twang & then scrap the car. Most expensive bit about these is the labour rates, not the actual parts. I managed to get all the parts i needed for the Gti for approx £100, which wouldnt even cover it getting serviced by a local garage, so in that context its worth doing.
Where i fall down is my complete lack of knowledge in how to do these jobs, but luckily i'm a member of the best car club in the UK with enthusiasts who love to mess about with cars which arent even their own. So thankyou to Doc & Vanny for volunteering to help me get her back on the road again.
I will keep everyone posted on how things go. Wish me luck guy's & hopefully i will see everyone at the national in my lovely Gti.

Bump
Is there anything else i should be considering to get done as well, i.e fuel filter??
Just changed one of the rear lights with a nice new one as the old one was cracked & was looking a bit manky, then noticed the other side has got a dirty great crack in it as well, bum bum bum.
Rear wash wipe wasnt letting any fluid through, traced to the plastic bit sticking out of the tailgate where the water comes out, bunged up, so sorted that. Boot light is loose, so a bit of builders caulk & thats stuck down.
Noticed a pipe in the engine bay which appears to be going rotten, i've taken a couple of pics as i dont know what it does. Anyone know how to post them?
Also appears to be a small lhm leak, not entirely sure wherefrom, either the front of the car near the radiator or one of the strut return pipes is a bit wet as well.
Hopefully thats all.
