That was a fun evening out.
Of course that engine sounds great.
It was built by a pair of valver gods.
I seem to remember in the best traditions of all car work, the evening finished with a massive drinking session!

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Depends how far you want to go really.
Total "as new" rebuild, around £3500.
Head rebuild, including tappets, guides etc around £1100
Just a top and tail overhaul, about £600
Obvioulsey it's an engine by engine thing.
Some are in good condition when stripped, and require little to make them very good.
Some are screwed and require a full rebuild.

Go find one, you wont!
I can think of less than 15 with mint engines, and none of them are likey to be for sale anytime soon.
Of course the other way to do it is buy a crashrd 205 with Mi16 conversion.
The pug boys went through a phase of spending lots on their engines.

Yep, and some right bargains can be had too, especially now they are moving on to the 2 litre CT lumps and GTi-6 lumps.
I dont know many people at all that want to spend these sorts of monies on an engine, but I did for mine, and it was worth it IMHO.
But I need to get out more.
It was never intended to be a racing engine, just reliable, but I wanted to know that it was as good as it could be, and it is better than I expected, so I was happy. The bank manager wasn't, but thats her problem!

Tricky question.
Current BX values would suggest that you don't spend more than - say - £600? - on an excellent one. Maybe add 100 or 200 for a valver.
But for an engineer as talented as Chris to rebuild an engine which was cutting-edge a few short years ago? 600-3500 starts to sounds cheap, once you know what he really does.
Non?

well it's performing plenty well for me now, still some niggles with the drive train, but the engine is kushtee, will get another service in 10 days time (the fourth in 4000 miles, see i promised to look after it) since the oil and filters are cheap thanks to GSF.
It did take two engine to get one goodun, and a fair wodge of cash ontop of one free engine, what isnt imediately apparent is that doc rebuilt that engine top to bottom and got it into the car pretty much in a day! Never seen anything quite like it to be honest! I learned many new tricks too.

Ok, enough flattery, my head will explode!
I learned engineering from my dad, and he has forgotten more than I will ever know.
A D6C isn't anything special, it's just a 1.9 litre 16 valve engine.
Sure, there's plenty of idiots out there that dont know what they are doing that can trash a perfectley good engine by building it wrong, but there's also alot of very talented people that know when it's right.
When you've built enough engines you just know when it's right, you dont need lasers or X-ray's, you can just look at it and say "yep, thats spot on" or "nope, needs some of this", or whatever.
It's very easy to destroy a valver engine. Handily none of the engines I've built or worked on has gone bang yet!
There are engineering shops that will rebuild a D6C FULLY for less than I charge, but this is a hobby for me, and I dont want people coming back in 2000 miles with a shagged engine, so every engine I build (for any vehicle, not just BX's) get's done with the absolute best components and without compromise. I've got work stacked up for 1000 years if I want it, so it's not like I charge alot for the profit. I dont do it for profit. All the money goes into the engine.
It's as much about ego as anything I guess, I'd hate to build an engine that was shit. And thus far, I never have.
If you think the expense is great for a D6C, you'd need to part with £10,000 for a rebuild on a Gardener 6LXB if I did it. And yes, there are people that are pestering me to do just that.

Thank you.
Well Chris I may have planted a few small seeds of discovery but it needed interest, skill, ability etc. to make them grow, and you are very good. Also you have a very important ingrediance of having the 'something' that tells you if its good or bad, or will work or not etc.
Am I biassed yes, proud of you for what you do and have achieved yes.
Thank you for your kind words.
Cheers.
Dad.
