we had the 16RE and 16RS which were the same engine basically but one was detunted in some way, I expect they did the same thing in france except one was called a 15 and the other 16. Vw did the same thing with Golf in the 90s, one had a 75bhp and the other 90bhp which was just down to cams and ecus otherwise all was the same.

Either way there was never a BX15 in the uk

BX Pilot

Post by scarecrow »

Hello

I'm getting confused here - so there's never been a bx badged with a 15 sold in the UK? I can't believe this lady is being disingenuous (maybe I can wonder?) - and as she bought it from new she surely must know what model it is? - 1.5 on the tailgate, she says

I guess I'll find out when I go and look - once the car's out of the garage. I dread London like the plague, and Haringay isn't the best part of town...

Best regards
Steve.

I say "I wonder" in ironic jest at some of the awful cars being sold on ebay! Before I go misunderstanding myself!! :-))

Oh God, why is there no edit key.

I meant Haringay is not the best part of town... for me to get to.

Hey Steve, no worries! Haringey is certainly not the centre of the universe!

I feel humbled by all the tech talk which is way over my head, and I have this sinking feeling that it will say 1.6 on the car after all and I've misremembered! Hope that's a good thing if that's the case...

As you can all see, I don't deserve to own one: one careful, but not knowledgeable lady owner etc etc!

Phew!

Thanks Carolyn.

Personally, the exact model isn't such a big issue - I'm not looking for a racing car - just an everyday relationship with a characterful car that I can sleep in when I go WWOOFing, and which doesn't require NASA to carry out a service ;))

The whole 1.5/1.6 thing just adds a bit of intrigue!

Looking forward to the photos.

Just to reiterate, BX15 models WERE marketed in France and elsewhere in Europe, but not in the UK: they used a lower-tune version of the 1580cc XU engine. Same engine as the BX16 models, but different state of tune, as Roverman says.

To make things confusing, a smallish batch of 15s were imported by Citroen UK and badged for the UK market as the 16RE. A Pilot will be a 16RS, even if a chip 's been knocked off the lower-left-hand corner of the number 6 on the tailgate! The engine capacity on the registration document starts with a 15 rather than than a 16 (1580cc). Maybe this is what's stuck in Caroline's mind - or the DVLA got it wrong?

I used to drive or be a passenger in a Pilot from time to time. The seat material looked MUCH more hard-wearing than that on the standard 16RS.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Pictures at last

Post by CarolynN8 »

Right guys, I have finally been able to take some photos although the car is still in the garage going through its MOT, so please excuse it being dusty and dirty and not the best shots.

First, I eat humble pie and agree that it not only says 1.6 on the tailgate, but 1.6 RS. As someone said upthread, on all the documentation it says 1580cc, sometimes shortened to 1.5, so that's probably why I mis-remembered. Apologies:

So, there you have it. We are currently waiting for a replacement pipe, due 30th June and after that it will hopefully be back on the road with 1 year's MOT and 6 months tax.

Hi carolyn, how much are did you want for it? please dont think me rude but "offers" isnt much use as people dont want to underbid for fear of offending, but sad as it is 16 petrols never fetch much even with low mileage.

Best is to ask a sensible price and negotiate around it.

Owing to the cost of the MOT that it's going through, I'm looking for offers around £700, not including the tax (which can be 6 or12 months depending on the buyer).

Sadly Carolyn I agree with Kitch, although I do appreciate you have spent alot of money on it lately it doesnt detract from what is 20 year old BX petrol in average condition which has avery limited appeal. I would imagine £300 to be its true value, if someone were to pay the asking price and then another £185 for 12 months tax your upto £885! which is good 16v money, also for that you could get a much newer but far less interesting vectra/mondeo.

Money spent on repairs doesn't add up to the value of the car, and never will. Rare, interesting and unique modifications might do (like a 1.5 engine  ) but overall Tim's about right on the price, although if it's T&T'd and mint, possibly pushing to £450 wouldn't be wildly out IMO. 16's aren't very sought after in BX fields, let alone with the general public sadly.
