Ah, I like your thinking. It did seem to cut off quite promptly...mat_fenwick wrote:They only claim that it could save you a litre per tank, so in the real world I'd expect less - in which case you'd be hard pressed to notice...
I wonder whether the sensitivity of the fuel cut off in the nozzle could lead to significant skewing of economy figures?
What sort of MPG do you get from your BX, petrol or diesel?

I've noticed that more filling up with LPG (which cuts off automatically when the tank reaches a certain level) - some stations I can get 10 litres more from empty than others.
And with normal fuel I've sometimes found that I get a poor mpg figure with one fill up, followed by a good figure with the next...

Thats why I fill to the brim or visible level in the filler. Going by the sensativity of the cut out is not the best guide.
Incidentally the cut out is actually a flow back valve that prevents fuel flowing back into the nozzle causing contamination as well as a safety feature to stop tanks overfilling or more acurately overflowing.
One of our vehicles is a real pain to fill up because you have to angle the nozzle and set it to the slowest fill setting or risk constant cut outs. If I went by the logic of the cut out tripped therfore I am full then the fuel economy would be way out and impossible to calculate.
LPG is a differant matter because it is an air sealed connection, the cut off point determined by the same principle except controlled by temperature variances.

I always fill my motor to the brim every time, have always done so on all my vehicles so that my consumption readings are all the same. Still on the same tank of fuel i filled up on in Looe when i did so on 6th Sept and am well over 400 miles [cant remember the zact figure, its dark n cold outside] with a quarter of a tank to go.
I will keep testing this new Shell stuff but i reccon theres something thats working in it. Shell, i hope your reading this, i could do with a few freebies.

I have noticed the LPG thing too, some stations let you trickle it in slowly until you get bored, whilst others go clunk and switch off.
Does make it tricky measuring the mpg on gas. Have to use the same pump each time to get a sensible figure.
What makes a bigger difference is the price variation between LPG stations. Round here it varies from 57p to 67p a litre. that's 17.5%
Wilst petrol only varies from 112 to 118, Only 5.3%

My last tank i managed 720 miles which is a maaaaaaaaaaaasive 3 miles more than my last tank & i used 1 litre less. So it's true Shell fuel save works I guess it's better than nothing, but not quite as good as the chap who started the other thread (which i can't find) who started the debate on Shell.....

I'm nearly 1/2 way through a tank of Shell at the moment, but as it is around 2 1/2p a litre more than my local Pace fuel station, that's the saving on my litre of fuel gone already
Incidentally, Shell must have been working on this with all those motor manufacturers for years so that the different makers could tune their tank sizes to match engine mpg so that everyone saves a litre

I rarely keep a record of day to day consumption ,but i have recently completed almost 2200 miles on my holiday from kent to john o groats.the car is a 1.9 diesel tgd hatch 1992 and it was towing a 15ft caravan for about 1200 miles.ashford kent to dalkeith which is just south of edinburgh--654 miles ,mostly towing=36.78 mpg
dalkeith to j o groats and back to dalkeith--957 miles --solo =51.26 mpg
return home to kent--604miles towing =32.74 mpg.
I did a similar journey a couple of years ago but with a tzd turbo diesel and I did miss the power while towing this time.
In all this travelling I only saw one bx it was a white tzd turbo with a lady driver, spotted just outside thurso.
total milage was2191 miles,fuel247 litres, average for the whole trip was39.91mpg

TZD Mileage
My TZD saloon costs me 10pence a mile on average.
So I suppose I get about 50ish and that is travelling at 70 on a motorway.

Don't know whether I'm a dreamer or a bragger but I get 55mpg on average from my non-turbo estate.
The best I ever got was 66mpg on a trip through Belgium and Holland at lorry speed + a bit of town traffic.
If you have a diesel, do yourself a favour and put in new injectors, you can save yourself 10 to 15% in fuel consumption ! Not only that, but the engine will be much smoother and quieter !

Resurrected thread...
After a week away driving about Wales (on a VERY deliberate economy run) and after 1100 miles the TGD Turbo returned 63.3mpg!
This included 816 miles on the first (almost) full tank!
All despite the retarded satnav taking us through the hills & lanes at every opportunity. Technology is shit.
Downgrade to a modern car?... I think not...

Still getting between 50-55 on average inc the odd longish run. I'd really like to know what the car would do if all i did was motorway mileage, i still think i'd be hard pushed to break Jay's figures. Perhaps if i remove the pigeon from the roof the car might be more aerodynamic

I usually get consumptions around 5.5 .. 6.2 litres per 100 km in the summer time and 6.0 .. 6.8 litres in the winter time (Break/Vans with non-turbo diesels). The main reason for the higher winter time consumption is the lighter fuel they sell in the cold season to prevent it going solid at temperatures below -15 C.

I started monitoring mine with fuelly.com earlier this year - so far a best of 53mpg and a worst of 36mpg - full info here. I could have done the same with Excel, but it's easier just to log onto the website and enter it there...
