Having a mk 1 there is actually no provision for front speakers except the dash tweeters and under dash "boom" speaker.. So as I too dont want to start cutting holes in the rear deck (which also gives big issues when you need to flatten the rear seat) I have opted for a suitably retro pair of Realistic (Radio Shack) minimus 7 bookshelf speakers that can either sit on the rear deck, on the rear seat floor space or even tucked up under the front seats depending on what you have aboard. I decided that the acoustic space in the C-pillars just would not be up to delivering any decent sound quality...
