Only the very early 1.4s had chains. Personally a cambelt doesn't worry me in the slightest, it's not a particularly difficult job on anything I've got, just a job that needs doing from time to time.

But back to the OP - I'm not sure we're really helping! It all comes down to personal preference in the end. Limiting it to the initial shortlist, if you like the way a turbodiesel feels (or are prepared to tolerate it for better mpg) get a TD, if not go for a GTi. The only reasons I'd suggest going for a 4x4 is if you want to have a rareity, or if you are likely to be towing the trail bike out of wet fields. The latter might be an important consideration, as any FWD car will be at a disadvantage for traction with a trailer on the back. You could always unhitch and move the trailer by hand to better ground though...

Another vote for the N/A diesel on this one or the TD if you want to pay a little more with a bit more fun. The TD is a more refined engine but does suffer a bit of turbo lag at low revs which could lead to a little delicate clutch/throttle control when towing on hill starts etc.

I would go for a 19 diesel. And don't ignore the estates; there have been quite a few recently cropping up. In fact there's one for sale at the moment which is a good example: http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15397

I used to tow heavier things than the car itself with the estate (1.9D, 1989 so a whole 69bhp!). Always towed well considering how light it was, and was never left needing more grunt. Don't get me wrong, you won't get there fast, but you won't struggle to get there.

I thought all pre-emmision tax bands were the same PLG price band?

Nope. There's a 1550cc cut-off pre-2001. My 2CV isn't quite half the cost to tax as my BX, but is not far off.

I would definatley go for a turbo diesel over non turbo, I used to have a zx diesel and that was depressingly slow! My father had a Tzd hatch and a tzd estate and they were superb cars I remember driving to France and Belgium in the estate going on a booze run! Lol what a car.... but I like sporty and unusual cars too that's why Im thinking gti or even a 4x4

It's surely also not just about what model you'd prefer, but if that model, in the right condition and in the right part of the country turns up.

I'd vote for the TD, but that's an uninformed opinion as that's all I've driven. :)

My only gripe with the TZD (I'm on my fifth) is that the location of the turbo can make some maintenance/repair jobs an absolute bastard – changing clutch cable and accessing the fittings to the heater rad are two examples. As has been said, 4 x 4 would be great if it was reliable but it's not. So out of the remaining two, I'd simply go for the first one which came up in good condition at the right price.
