So i've just looked up insurance etc for this, it's going to be expensive until my point disappear!

But then I thought, it's not going to get used much initially so this isn't too much of a problem - I could just pay for day/weekend temporary insurance when I want to use it.

But then again I remembered the new law stating if you're car is taxed it has to be insured (load of bollocks, it's not going to do anything about the numbers of uninsured drivers). It would be a REALLY big pain in the arse to tax and sorn it every weekend I want to use it...

But then again again, one of the exceptions to this is if the car has been off the road since before the SORN system came into effect - 31st Jan 1998 so I can have it taxed and MOT'd in my garage and arrange temporary insurance for when I want to use it? Because the last time it was taxed (page 1 of this thread) was in 1996, before the whole sorn thing :D

Can you not get classic insurance? I'd want it on an agreed value policy anyway to be honest. Not currently an option if you're under 21 though...(and still very pricey for under 25s I think).

Hold the phone, read further down the page and it says
Stupid government arseholes wrote:How does this affect pre-SORN vehicles? Vehicles which have been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 are exempt from this law. If they are brought back into use they will no longer be exempt. If you want to bring the vehicle back into use, you will need to tax and insure it.
So for cars that have been off the road since before SORN, with no tax anyway do not require insurance. Well DUH!

So this is just a polite note to the uninsured and untaxed drivers that if they fancied becoming legit and taxing their car - they will need insurance too. Or face £100 fine. What a load of shite. Why bother with this exception, it is completely irrelevant to anything. Fucking tories.

I'm 22 so can use some of the policies, thing is I have 6 points and 3 accidents in the last 5 years. (Don't get me started on the details). So most of them won't insure me.

Most don't want to insure under 25s anyway, but might be worth giving Footman James a call. You'll probably have to garage the car (which is sensible) and restrict annual mileage though - they tend to be more relaxed about these once you're past 25.

Thanks chaps, i will try lancaster and footman james. It will be garaged anyway, and restricted mileage isn't an issue.

How strict are these companies with the limited mileage, do they monitor or check etc?

They don't monitor it, but in the event of a claim they'd want to be checking the MOT history I suspect!

With Adrian Flux on the van I have to make a mileage declaration at every renewal date. However, if you lend your vehicle out to someone who is covered on their insurance, that (to be fair) shouldn't eat into your mileage limit. I haven't asked about this, but I suspect that you'd need to document what miles were covered by another driver.

I had my mate who was 21 (sadly now no longer with us) insured on my 1970 Beetle last year with Footman James, and it was only another £40 to add him on, which mad the total amount payable £135!.

My uudrestanding is that if a car is sorned it should still be insured anyway. Out of my 7 cars only two are currenly taxed, but all are insured.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

There's no legal reason to insure a SORNd car, just a practical one - especially if the car has value.

Lancaster bumped up the quote on the valver last year from £75 to £150! Used Sure Term Direct this time around which was £95. All prices fully comp with mileage of 3000mls.Interestingly Sure Term and Lancaster insurance buth share the same address, so possibily they are sister companies.
