@Paul: nice one... I hadn't considered a coupé!.... mmm
A mate of mine has been running a 2 litre petrol for the last 5 or 6 years and all he's shelled out is stuff for routine maintenance. They're very nice cars. The BIG bargains are the 3.0 litre V6s (if you're feeling brave!), but lots of good petrol autos for not much money. Like . . .
Good lord! I think that's what you'd call 'fully loaded' Phil - and very nice too. On the plus side I think it's as near as modern cars get to 'timeless elegance' and it's a barrow load of goodies for buttons. On the down side I'd need to know I had the back up funds to give it the TLC it deserves and will inevitably need.
Mats suggestion of consulting an expert before parting with cash is an excellent idea. I know Jim Eastment and his Xantia gang are also 406 coupe fans - he'd also be able to tell you what was worth a punt and what wasn't.
If 'pretty' was your only criteria - buy that car NOW!
Ive heard a few horror stories of the electrical gremlins on these and rather harsh economy too, lovely looking beast though! They did do a 2.2 HDI before they ended production I think?

They did, and I think that's the one to go for - unfortunately so does everyone else; good ones still fetch 2-3k.
It seems almost illegally wrong to choose such a beautiful car and then opt for a four-pot petrol or, even worse, a diesel! Has to be the V6. Can't imagine there would be any more electrical gremlins than a Xantia with the same engine (also sublime). That might not be saying much though...
I reckon if you could resist nailing it, the V6 would nudge 30mpg. That'd do me.
V6 on lpg would make good sense, if it worked properly, I sold a couple of these ages ago and they had done a few miles back then, they were a bit fragile!

^There is a certain logic there I have to admit - so you've made me feel a bit guilty posting this . . .
But a lovely looking sports coupe that's likely to be reliable, return excellent fuel economy and significantly less than 2 grand. Sounds pretty good to me?
