The Aubergine

Post by TizzyD »

I'm not too sure how to start this off so I'll just dive in with what I have planned, here it is the day I got it.

First things on the 'To Do List' are, whole new exhaust system plus some welding, front to back fuel lines and strut return pipes which it is booked in for. Heres the exhaust arrangement and the corner of the boot floor that needs some welding.

After that, in no particular order its:
1) Wheel trim, might get some TZD covers until some Speedlines come up
2) Front fogs, the switch lights up when pressed but nothing happens so it maybe just the bulbs have gone or a bad connection.
3) Glovebox lid hangs at an odd angle and doesn't sit flush with the dash
4) Passenger window switch is intermittent, on a side note, should the passenger have a one touch switch like the driver ? if not, is there away to wire one in ?

Then the big stuff like paint work if it can't be saved with a proper cut and polish, and the drivers door is badly dented round the lock and the paint has been chipped off and then patched up in places.

That's it so far . . .

Original TZD trims are quite rare nowadays, I regret the day I binned a set! Glovebox lid hinges are a common problem, but I think I know someone with a spare (I have one but I'm keeping it for mine!)

Passenger side doesn't have a one touch switch, can be fitted with one but needs the controller too and will lose the ability to be controlled from the driver's side unless you modify the wiring. Does it work OK from the driver's side at the moment? If so, chances are it's just the switch at fault.

They should look like this;

As Mat says, pretty rare now. It might be easier to source a set of speedlines.

That exhaust hanger arrangement is excellent! I like the little foam cushion.

Plus, the aerial is nice and erect too, very perky. :)

Looks a goodun, and sounds like you're willing to get what needs doing done.

Apart from the exhaust looking rusty, any reason for changing the lot? if its not holed or blowing, then just leave as is. You could smarten up the back box by de-rusting & using some of that heatproof paint to smarten it up a bit, but i wouldn't spend money unless its actually necessary.

It's been welded in places but it's started blowing again so just getting whole new system while it's in for the other bits and bobs

Right, just been out for a spin and the rev counter is on the blink, it was fine, then all of a sudden it drops, but then comes back a moment later then drops again, no loss of power on the car though, plus the speedo twitch is quite bad until it's up around 60 or 70 so I thinks it's the cables ? Also going to need a set of door locks as I have 3 ignition keys, 1 door key which only works the driver door and fuel cap, and a busted passenger door lock that does nothing, but I do have a working plip ... every so often

Speedo twitch is typical BX problem, cables are NLA so if it works I would just live with it, try spraying some lubricant inside the cables. Rev counter sounds like a dodgy sensor, sadly not uncommon.

Hi and welcome, it's great to see youngsters keeping the BX flag flying. I would wip your back bumper off and lift the boot carpet when assesing the welding round the exhaust hanger, it only takes 5 minutes and may show up some little extras that are best done at the same time.
Love the avatar BTW.

Oh excellent, that looks really quite tidy, rust prevention/protection at this stage is much better than cure later.

Blimey. Rob's getting a lot of BX arse welding in at the moment then! (presume this is Chevronics?). I was just thinking how much more solid it looks than my pair...
