sorry did i miss something (nout new there) but i did think i read earlier in this story you said the MOT tester had missed the rear arm bearing when looking your car over,

Yes he did. He took a crow bar to lever the wheel in from the ramp, but it did not budge an inche. I think its because they are locked into place with the car on high mode, or by the tension in the anti-roll bar.

Tim, You have got me thinking - once the replacement wheel issue is resolved I shall be looking for four wheels to put the original 1991 tyres off my TGS Estate onto for show purposes so I am in the business for helping clear someones garage - filthy lucre is there ready....

they are not really meant to check for play in the suspension with it on full hieght, as this does lock everything up solid and no play can be felt,

Ah yes, its safe and ill bring it back asap Tim.

Malcolm-your right about the mot. They obviously don't realise how the system works.
