The red estate is mine! I would really like to go - but I'm in France in a few days and can't really justify/afford to go again (just getting to Dover and back is £100 in fuel). This is my car - H497 GUR - a '91 TGD , called "Daisy".

Mike - in response to your post in the other thread, if you got the BX Mk1 estate in a suitable state to take, I'd probably be up for sharing costs on getting it there.
What it ideally needs for such a long trip:
Door seals. I think this is where the water is getting in. Mothman supplied a better one, which has improved things, but it's not ideal if you're doing a long trip. Unless you book dry weather.
Engine is not entirely healthy (doesn't pull very well) but it still seems happy to cover the miles. Engine mounts are suspicious. The clutch is good but it can be juddery at low speeds.
Gearbox has no first gear synchro but is otherwise fine.
Steering rack is clonky. This needs sorting I'd say. It's probably the main reason I've stopped using the car (that and the appalling weather!).

So, very sortable I'd say.

We will be heading to the Alps around Morzine, then up towards the Vosges Mountains before heading to the Loire Valley; so not near Brittany unfortunately. I'm trying desperately to think how I can make another trip in September!

I only look at the pictures! It's great to see there's now a 'de mon Pere' book on the BX: it really has made it as a classic. Looking at the poster for the event makes it look even more tempting - worth it just for the sticker!

I'm off to Tony Weston, my local friendly specialist, this morning to see if he has any BX's being broken, which would help with parts, so my solutions are:

Door seals - good 2nd hand, or failing that a roll of universal seal
Engine - Probably live with the low power for now if emmissions etc. are healthy, as I think you've tried all the easy stuff. New mounts, and with my driving style I'll not often be moving slow enough to feel the clutch
Gearbox - I assume the gearbox is the original with the early reverse position? I'm a bit rusty, but up for double declutching in and out of first after years of H vans and series Land Rovers with no synchro in the 1st 1 or 2 gears. I've not used them for a while, but I've used Bristol Transmissions in the past for rebuilding obsolete gearboxes (including H Van!) for a longer term solution
Steering - IIRK it's a power rack? - I've priced a recon unit at around £100, but it's the main reason for my visit to Tony.

It's amazing what some people will do to beat the GS's sticker count!

I have managed once or twice to double-declutch into first (after years of 2CV practice). For some reason though, this trick in a gear that SHOULD have synchromesh is never as easy as a car with absolutely none in the first place. The vast majority of the time, you don't need first though.

It is a power rack.

Maybe I should add that the Wartburg had busted syncros on 2nd & 3rd (albiet assisted by a freewheel), while my 73 Dyane's syncro is totally shot in 2nd.

It does remind me of a conversation years ago with a friend who ran a DKW Junior as daily transport for several years, the last 2 with no 1st gear whatsoever. He simply used 2nd instead, slipping the clutch for hill starts, and making sure when moving that he never slowed enough to need 1st gear
