Re: abs sensor

Post by themildbunch »

I expect so - it's not particularly new technology but just neatly wrapped in BX shaped rubber -

It's not difficult to reclaim them from old arms / hubs.. I got a pair of scrap rear arms 12 months ago with the sensors in - if you take the backing plate off and careful use of plug gas, time and gentle drifting got them out easily in one piece... Haven't actually tested them yet though - anyone remember what the resistance is of a good one?

No idea Mike, it would be great to find a company that can just make them up for a sensible price to keep these cars on the road. These damn mot changes are deliberately trying to fail cars to get them off the road. I wonder how our overseas club members deal with this same issue??

Yes you definitely must.
The rear ones need very gentle persuasion to remove without damage. If you cut down through the retaining hole on the suspension arm you can spreadout the size of the hole and then get the thing moving easily.
Or just keep the whole rear suspension arms and sensors ready for new bearings and fitting when needed. Could be a good investment.

£122  - With people willing to pay that much for a sensor, it must be worth looking at getting something made, either complete sensors or a kit to adapt something else!

Yes, I'd have thought that too - I'd also have thought that whatever other PSA model shared a similar hub design would have an ABS sensor that would maybe fit, be adapted or at least chopped and soldered onto a BX cable if the lengths were different.. On the other hand they'd probably be NLA too.

I've not seen the BX setup, so I may be talking crap here, but if I understand it correctly there's a sort of toothed ring on the hub or drive shaft that the sensor is pointed at so that each sensor is able to tell the ABS processor the speed of each wheel?

If this is the case, then the actual location of the sensor doesn't matter so long as it's distance from and orientation towards the ring is correct. In theory, you could use any sensor that works the same way as the original system, and make a bracket to suit that could be clamped, bolted or even welded in position. It could even be a lower resistance, with a resistor wired in to correct this.

Assuming they use the same basic system, I'd start by looking at ZX,s, Xantias, and Pug 309 and 405's

Interestingly i have two BX sensors that are 'FoMoCo' branded at the sensor end! The vehicle harness/connector end is a very common connector type. I've looked and looked to see if i could track down what Ford car has the same sensor but never had any luck! I thought maybe late Sierra/early Mk3 Escort but it's never turned anything up.

Any reason why a Xantia sensor wont work (other than the connector which is easily changed)?

Your search though was for the part number of an assembly ie Sensor + connector. What you need for reference is the drawing of that assembly which will identify the constituent part of that sensor. Then this can be checked against other sensor assembly drawings to see if any of those match.
Vanny mentioned that he had seen FoMoCo stamped on a sensor he removed. It may be worth checking out the sensors used for the Sierra as Ford were the early adopters of ABS in mass production cars.

I've read somewhere that the 405 shares the same sensor, but a different connector. No idea if they are more plentiful though. Joining/replacing the cable would be fairly easy, but not so easy to stop it failing again at the join - any protection at the join (such as glue lined heatshink) will be more rigid than the rest of the cable, and hence the cable will be more likely to fail where it meets the more rigid part. It may still give a satisfactory life though, especially as mileage of most BXs is going to be limited.

Would Bosch have been the OE part supplier? Might be worth a search on Bosch's own parts catalogue.
