Re: £40 winter restoration
Does it increase the torque figures as well & does the character of the engine change that much, i.e. its got more mid range grunt?

Re: £40 winter restoration
That does sound super lovely, I need to get into mine next spring. I forgot how f@@king good that engine sounds.
Got some questions then.
How do gap less rings work?
What did you mean exactly by gaping the ring?
What is the difference between 16v liners and 8v ones you used?
Are they standard injectors?

Gapless rings (Mine are gapless top rings, you can also get gapless second, but never both at same time!) are basically a piston ring made up of two parts - a rail and a ring. Both have gaps as standard rings do, but because the ring sits in the rail, the theory is that it 'fills' the gap.

I've used them on my MR2 with a GT35, GT40 and soon a borg warner S366 and theyre good - leakdown is curently about 2%
Leakdown on the BX is currently about 3% and compression is around 230psi on all cylinders after running in.
You still need to gap them, as in carefully file a little off the edge with a good sharp file so when they are in the bore there is a certain end gap so they dont butt together when warm and therefore seizing in the bore.
Those liners from what I can tell wont be any disadvantage, the main bonus they are less than half the price of 16V ones. I know a few guys running them in turbocharged XU's and they hold up well
Injectors are very slightly higher capacity (I think like 10 or 20cc extra). Once I sort out the camshafts it'll hopefully be a bit nippier.

Thanks Mark, I shall do a little research, but what you've done is along my kind of modding, nothing permanent.
Keep us posted mate, excellent photos, giving me inspiration!
