Footman James, Peter James, Adrian Flux, Chris Knott and Lancaster all wanted at one more year of NCB/driving experience than I had each time I asked for a quote from them. I expect that at renewal in a few months they'll all want 3 years NCB/experience and I'll only have 2 on a full license. I'm with Admiral and they're offering me genuinely the best policy out there both in terms of cover and cost, they undercut the cheapest competitor that would insure me by £300 at my last renewal.

Could be worse, the neighbour's son is coming up to his 17th birthday and he wants to get a car, he's a proper little spanner monkey, but everything he looks at is ridiculously expensive. He even looked at things like 998cc Fiat Pandas (which he hates) to bring it down and was quoted £2k by pretty much everyone. Something like a 1 litre Clio, Polo or Corsa will set him back £7k. If he wanted anything even slightly sporty he'd be looking at 5 figure sums.

He should try an unusual car such as a 2 litre XM, sometimes by having something unusual that no 17yr old is expected to have, the premium whilst still high is less than a corsa style car which of course thousands of newbie drivers get & insurers have stacks of data to show that these types of cars get crashed regularly. Worth a try at the very least.

I've already suggested he look for 'quirky and Grandad' cars, Austin FX4s (proper London taxi) seem to be a good bet lately, as are any big 80s/90s Volvo estates. The BX is about the same for me to insure as a Mk2 Polo and I know which I'd prefer...

It's about £170 a year for an 8000 mile policy on Timex, with the GS on unlimited mileage with agreed value and my no claims discount for £125 a year. Both are insured for commuting and when I checked last month it was cheaper this way round than the other!
