We have a high quality, but not cheap sprayers by us. A mate had his 2CV sprayed there - he stripped it all down, carried out some bodywork repairs, then trailered the stripped shell and all the panels down there. A few weeks later he went back down, collected all the panels and the shell, all of which had been resprayed inside and out, and handed over £1900!

Ouch! Not worth it for a BX or Xant (probably never for a Xant).

Got a mate who pays £5000 for a paint job but it's just about worth it on an RS2000 Mk 2

Financially, it probably wasn't worth it for the 2CV when you put together the rest of the costs incurred, including stove enamelling of some components, replacement chassis, carpets, the repair panels, new brake pipes, seat covers and all the other bit and pieces, plus his time.

It started as a generally solid and well cared for car, which upon investigating a leaky windscreen needed a new lower surround. It turned into the above on the basis that of all his collection, this one he'd owned from new, and if he ever needed to downsize to one classic, this would be the one, as the family had grown up with it.

If you have a BX or Xant that you have no plans to get rid of, then if you have the money it's worth doing. If the car in question is likely to be replaced at some future point, then the finances play a bigger part and in that case it probably wouldn't be worth it any time this decade!

Yes, but maybe Tim's place hasn't invested in the spray bays and drive-in ovens that you need to do vehicle re-painting at a professional level.Having reserved a large area of floorspace and investing in plant at that level, you need to attract a continuous flow of customers to make it worthwhile.

We do have all the kit, it's just not financially worthwhile having a car in for ages and one man on it constantly, more money is made doing lots of smaller jobs I think. They do work for me when they have a bit of spare time and prefer the panels off the car as space is a real premium.

I understand, but surely a £40 hour is a £40 hour and as long as they're paid for hours why would it matter, unless you have a few jobs in quoted on menu times and then do them bonus fashion to get the turn around... I remember dealershipdays like those 32 hours clocked by Tuesday :)

There isn't as much profit to be made per hour doing that type of work, thats probably the reason tbh, its always about maximising profit from employees :(

I can completely understand it - with a full restoration it's a longer term thing which is going to get in the way of the routine jobs. If work is quiet then it makes sense, but if you already have enough on your plate then it makes sense to only accept the jobs you can do.

At my work I sometimes have to tell customers that yes, we can do the job but not within a realistic time frame so they are better off going elsewhere. Sure, you lose out on the business but it's better than accepting it and it dragging on and on and on...hopefully they appreciate the honesty.

Just that really, space is a real premium as we have no off site storage.

My son who hates our BX started at Sheffield Hallam University last week and text me earlier this week "Don't believe it I can't get away from them, there's a bloody BX parked outside my bedroom window", Not you by any chance Matt?

I've seen another couple of BX's around Sheffield, so it'll be interesting to see whether its a hatch/estate & what colour it is.
