Wimp miles here, I fear. I do not do the mileage I used to. Be lucky if its 5,000 a year, and that will be effected by the number of other cars going. Likewise I hope the car lasts longer by not towing the engine out of it. Sadly most of my everyday cars ended ownership with a weak or dead engine from hard work. Having retired, pretty much, I will not be doing so much of that. I would hope the Estate will last for years, which is why I am spending money on it slowly, as it proves to be worth the investment being pretty free of rust. Its no minter though, and that is not my interest in it either. So very much a daily car but not in the huge mileage camp, which is what many of these diesel ones were bought to do. They seem to manage 250k miles if looked after, quite happily.

Daily drive for me (or will be when i get her on the road) and will be covering about 5k miles a year. It's been more or less the same for about 9 years in one bx or another. My first tgd I had from '97 till 2004 and went from 66k to 196k, 130k over 7 years, just under 20k per year.

The grey one's my daily driver/workhorse, just went through 190,000 today. It does about 12k a year, including at least half a dozen 1000-mile round trips back to UK in a few days, almost always fully loaded and/or towing. When I get the white one back on the road, I'll split the duties between them. In my experience they like to be used regularly - I've had far more problems with BXs through laying-up than through high mileages.

Interesting comments - looks like there's more BXs in regular use than I thought. The comment about laying up versus usage is a good point; I've noticed (personally) mainly electrical niggles rather than suspension problems seem to occur after a period of storage. That and the rear brakes seizing.

Got to keep using them Mat as i have found.

I have to give a weekend to a couple of vehicles at a time to keep things 'loose' if you know what i mean. Bit more difficult in the winter though with salt on the roads.

Maybe it's just the generally damp air around here, but even in a garage things corrode due to the condensation. Even some of my more rarely used tools started to go rusty! And there was the usual corrosion on the rear brake calipers, despite the BX being garaged over the winter. For that reason, I'll try and keep the BX road legal this winter although will leave the Focus to eat the lion's share of the salt and grit.

For me, I have found rather than being a collectors/rare car I just like the BX. It is so versatile and just the right size, does what I want, is comfortable you can do 4 or 400 miles anytime etc. It's not the greatest handling but pretty good and has good brakes and the driving position fits 'like a glove'. Suppose I've just got to used to it and anything else seems strange. Yet to find its equal.
Even if I bought a new car I would be looking for certain qualities, like 4' or 1.25 metres through the tailgate for 8X4 boards in 1/2 - a fail for almost all modern cars esp VW group. Was tempted by the original Focus as Ford did a good job with that, somewhat similar to Citroen with the BX, to save/reestablish the marque and mid size family car. Pity the newer Focus has lost a little of its committed design externally. Not many cars (outer shell shape) are designed by one or two people now.
Maybe too many focus groups - pun intended.

Mine is my only car (tho' not for long ;P) and daily driver - short commute (tho' possibly also not for long ;P) of only 20 miles a day or so. Add in leisure mileage and I probably did about 12K in the first year I had it, likely to be more this year what with Scotland trip and various other running round!

I do a daily commute of 50 miles,In the last 12 months I covered 17,000 miles in my tzd. It's my only car and I have it because of it's size, adaptability and comfort,so it has to be able to do the job.Just done a 600 mile return trip to Tyneside.I've had xantia estates which were good cars, but I prefer the BX.

Same here. Quite close to the sea here as well, which doesn't help.

I never seem to have a problem caused by them sitting around (see the estate for proof!) but I'm not afraid to use them in all conditions. They're mass produced, monocoque modern(relatively speaking) designs, and truth be told if I don't drive them whenever the hell I want (if I can afford it) then there's not much point me having them IMO.

I think the cars that get used as dailys and can still cut it during a show or similar are the best.

When my TD Hurricane was attempted to be resurrected after 3.5 years of non use due to an engine problem it would not start as no diesel was being pumped through.
It was the injection pump not working. I took it to a diesel specialist who sorted it for me saying that the pump had not failed mechanically but the diesel in it had broken down and it was gummed up internally, with some rusting, no valves could work and it needed dismantling, a thorough clean out and a new front bearing too as this was beginning to pack up.

Is this BS ? Although I have heard that old diesel goes bad which makes me wonder if I should dump what is left in the tank before I start it up again as I am near to completing an engine change from the ex BX estate.

I bought my Hurricane on the 3rd of March 2011 @ 175K, It's currently on 187K. I acquired the TGD on the 7th January 2012 @ 103K and it's now on 113K.

I agree with Kitch: it's use 'em or lose 'em really and a healthy level of use is probably part of good maintenance - that is what they were designed for.

Diesel can indeed go off - either going waxy and thick or being infested with micro-organisms that turn it into a right mess. I'd be inclined to drain and flush the system to be on the safe side, but if what comes out of the tank looks and smells like clean diesel, it's probably fine - even if you put it back in the tank at the rate of a gallon or so every fill-up just to use it up and not waste it. I usually use any left-over fuel like that in the tractor or the JCB, but if for some strange reason you don't have either of those handy you'll have to improvise!
