i have a 90 h plate gti 8v with jetronic, i can see nothing like this on mine, (jetronic dosen't use a crank sensor it gets its timing from the dizzy i beleive) i would be inclined to agree with j.w and go with the swapped g/box theory.
wasn't 90 the year of changeover from motronic to bosch jetronic?
and yes the gti 8v has 2 earth straps 1 small 1 large, why?? i dont know, of which both mine were badly corroded/broken.

Re: Wire off!
Thinking about this I've never seen it fitted to an XU, only a TU, but from what I can make out in the picture it looks more like the sensor for this than the crank position sensor required for the Motronic system.mat_fenwick wrote:The eBay link you've posted is for the primitive 'diagnostic socket' fitted to some XU and TU engines. It's not really a diagnostic socket at all, but referred to as such in some manuals - all it allows is for you to plug in something to tell you the revs.
The crank sensor for Motronic looks like this:
Compared with the one on eBay that's for the 'diagnostic socket':
Either way it's not required.
Re: Wire off!
Well thank you all.
I'm going with the diagnostic socket theory, as the last owner assures me it's never had a gearbox, and he's had it from new!
I have the full history of the car and nothing to suggest it's had a gearbox.
I think the 'diagnostic socket' is the right answer, i've pulled the sensor out and it look exactly like the 2nd picture as it just pushes in - no bolt to hold it in.
The wire has broken off, so I'll will try and find the other end, which I will expect to be the 3 pin connector

Re: Wire off!
I have to disagree Pogo, it's definitely had a gearbox at some point, in fact I'd go so far as to say it still has one!
