I removed the gearknob, gaiter and innter gaiter yesterday to have a quick look at the linkage/selector on the Estate....amazingly most of the bushes have gone and its so rusty, there a good inch of free playon the shaft where the bushes once were!.

So Im hoping it may be an easy fix with a couple of bushes and washers!

Once, along time ago, never again....

Can I do this from inside the car (dismantle the linkage/selector) as I have borrowed a selection of rubber bushes and washers from work I want to try and "pack it out with" and tighten up the change.

My GT spat it's linkage bushes a while bak. So I removed the rubber and metal bush entirely

As Sloppy as it is now, I have gotten used to it =-- and I have no problems finding any gears..previously it would struggle to sometimes find first or reverse..So message to you ...all or nothing ..either replace the linkage bush or remove it entirely.

Now sorted, very fiddly, but 2 2p sized washers had sorted most of the slack, although theres play further down the linkages, but thats to be expected with 204000 miles!

Beat me on the engine stakes then! Not sure about the gearbox, although I do plan on swapping it for a diesel hatchback box I have.
