The gears are really nice on my 16V – a good quality new clutch and cable makes a huge difference. So many BXs now have tired old clutches…

My 16 (new) clutch is very light-on a par with the hydraulic one in our Santa Fe, one of the reasons it's so nice to drive, along with the power steering, new struts and soft spheres.
The GTi I used to have though had a much heavier clutch pedal, although the gear change itself was super slick and a joy to use.
The gear change on the 16 in comparison is a little notchy into first.
The tzd turbo was heavier again but I think that clutch was pretty old. The gearstick also had loads of play and wobbled around under boost in 5th!

I agree that with new proper bits setup correctly they are smooth and shouldn't be heavy.

The problem Ian is the clutches are normally tired, a new clutch will make a huge difference!
..that_ When the thrust bearing runs short of lubrication and it starts grinding into the spring tines - yeah it's heavy. Fit a new Valeo clutch and it becomes very light.

Obviously a tired clutch wouldn't help matters but mine isn't so even with a perfectly operating clutch it is just not a nice feeling gear selection.
