A proper bench mounted vice would be better Max, but it maybe possible without !

Image /\ by Riku from THIS thread, also make sure you also have a good quality hex. (IIRC 13mm A/F) socket to undo the rear Anti-roll bar clamps

Whatever you DO-NOT use a Bi-Hex (12-point socket) as there is a Very high risk of those type rounding off the corners on the head of clamping bolt (As these in particular have a larger thread size ratio to bolt head) and then the only way to get them out is with heat from an oxy-acetylene torch after 'Forging' a smaller size socket on to the rounded off head !

Also on one occasion I've had a good purchase on the head of the clamping bolt head only to have the 'bar-steward' shear off flush with the face of the radius arm

You have be warned of the perils of DIYing this evil task on the ^^bx>

Good luck Max, I'll be watching this thread with great interest !

when reassembling pack them full of grease with a piping bag or similar, they will outlast the car then.

Well I got the near side rear arm off ok tonight.the inner rod of the suspension cylinder didn't seem to want to retract back though, which made getting the arm out a bit tricky

All the bolts etc came undone fairly easily.

Nearside rear arm bearing done! Have to fit to car and do the other one next, hopefully will be a bit quicker! Rewarding. Let's hope it all behaves when back together. Thanks to Mat Fenwick for the guide. Packed it full of a mix of lithium grease and gear oil. The black and decker workbench served ok.

Not sure this is ideal as there is a drain hole at the very bottom of the casting at the wheel end. The gear oil will run down the casting and out on the road unless you plug the drain hole, even then it will just run down to the boom of the casting away from the bearings?

????? The plastic inner sleeve and the bearings are in effect a closed system for a lubricant as long as the outer oil seals are intact and the grease is packed into the plastic sleeve.

Yes I would think so. Followed the advice on the technical FAQ page on here. Grease goes inside the plastic tube.
