That'll be a fun repair piece to make, although at least it seems to be in he single skin area. What's it like in the wheelarch?

not quite finished yet, but the basic shape is there. still a bit of finishing to do, not too bad for a first attempt at this area.

i had to weld the inside as well where all the panels meet just inside the front edge of wheelarch.

Ah yes, had to do the inside bit on the driver's side of Timex, although the rot was all inwards of that joint in my case, and had spread into the subframe mount!

is that all a single skin assembly then - looking a the top picture where you can see the grass thru the hole?

most of it is single skin, apart from the bottom front edge of arch which is now double skin as i had to weld the inside up first, so i had some metal to get on to and maintain some sort of shape

Brian - did you makeup a repair piece to fill that hole then & butt weld it in place? I did something similar on a smaller scale on an old camper van - I found it pretty hard going as i'm a learner with the MIG but keen to learn.

the repair was done in 2 pieces, bottom half top half, let the steel into the gaps then beat into shape, im no pro with a mig but getting better.

Yes this is the main structural piece that needs checking and sorting before it spreads too far. I scrapped my last TGD because the rust had spread too far here and managed to de-rust my TZD in that area before it became a problem. I think this is why Mulley his scrapping is TXD now.

It's what killed Jaba's estate last year too - and that car looked really good from the outside!

I have the other side to do on Timex now, but before that I suspect from the state of the sills that I may have both sides to do on Fred 1st.

Is it possible to get to the back of this area between the skins to get some wax in there or is it a box section?

Yes and no! The first couple of inches inbound from the wing joint is single skinned, then it's box section. It's not even box section that can be easily filled with wax, as the C post box section from the door catch pin down to just above the sill has a big lump of foam in it which soaks up any damp that gets in there.
