That C5 is an interesting spot...
HAS A MOT TILL MAY 3OTH 2104

Actually not that far from me and a little bit tempting at £675 with the MOT on the BX very soon and likely to have corrosion issues.

Kevan, not bored yet :) It's quite a refined beast which is nice & has a/c, so looking forward to summer driving without sweating like a pig. Quite good fun to drive as well, i wasn't expecting it to be so good tbh, still needs a bit of fettling & i've seen a cheap re-map which should be good for 140bhp, which should make it a bit more lively :) But that's on the back burner until i've sorted out the niggles etc...

I've had to have the following done, at approx 116400 odd miles:

Driver side balljoint & droplink
4x Dunlop Sport Bluresponse
Psgr front inner door handle replaced with 2nd hand item off the bay of dread.
Grinding sound at the rear is the inner wheel catching the rear brake calipers, so looks like the wrong wheels have been fitted, now that is fucking annoying, anyway, solution was to grind away 1mm off the caliper so that i now clears it. I do have 2 spare steel wheels that came with the car, i'll get them to check whether these are the correct size & if so i'll get them swapped over.
Passed MOT with one advisory, slight leak on exhaust, unfortunately its near to the cat, hopefully it can be welded as otherwise its a cat replacement, erm no ta :( So far, this car has cost me a lot of money over the purchase price, so not that impressed, i think the seller must have known all this stuff was coming up.

It does seem to drive very well now, but i suspect that it won't be long before the electric hydraulic pump packs in along with those exepnsive silver spheres which must still be the originals, oh the joy's of buying cheap old cars, aaaargh!!!

Still got to sort out some internal trim bits, stereo has a mind of its own, i tried to find the pollen filter, no luck there, perhaps this one doesn't have one fitted?

Some water is getting into the car, not sure where from, any ideas?

Still need to get the car lexia'd to see what horrors are thrown up. A few screws & bolts missing from the engine bay need sourcing etc....

Initial impressions of the new tyres are, they are very quiet compared to what was on before, so thats a positive :)

Welcome to the world of the pile of POO - C5's

a) The wheels WILL be the correct size, so don't even bother wasting your time to check !

b) Have you joined up on the FCF yet (As previously advised) ?

c) If not you need to, as your New toy has the common 'Rear Calliper' FUNNY-ANGLE problem which can also be a problem on XANTIA'S too

I didn't realise what a pile of poo the Xantia/C5's are (After working on a C5 with this very problem last year) which isn't present on the BX/XM models :?

So there you have it Matt, take a good read thro' those links, but if your still not convinced heres a ANOTHER and ANOTHER outlying your problem.

Happy reading thro' the threads and good luck, as the grinding off approx 1mm off the calliper would NOT have cured your real problem !

Rather confirms my opinion of these later cars. For cheap home based maintenance running on a budget, junk! So BX's rust. Well there is choice there and it can be seen. Argumentative computers and poor engineering principles, your stuck. :-&

Which is better Sinclair or Citroen? The Sinclair as you got a box with it. Hours of fun for the kids rather than you :) .

I have been tempted by a Xant a few times but never quite made the step. It would have to be the 1.9 TD for me. Simple is best. And when the turbo blew on the Blingo at Christmas I was within a few hours of buying a C5 2.0hdi and the seller pulled out. For all their electronic gremlins I still have a soft spot for them and prices are good now.

Hi Mark,
No, I was mainly referring to the 'Rear Caliper corrosion' which in turn causes the 'The funny Angle' problem and then the 'Interference Rub' on the inner side of the wheel rim !

I was really only making a 'Bit of light fun' as I just find it rather strange for Matthew in not asking question first (on the correct forum) which would have preventing him fettling of the caliper castings so as to get some wheel rim clearance

The C5 I repaired this common problem on was unbelievably bad, and as stated on the FCF links which give good clear instructions (Especially the one Jim posted in) as to perils that can be experienced especially if you don't clean and apply plenty of penetrating fluids prior to removing the rusted up threads on the caliper mounting bolts which protrude the mounting bracket on the Rear arms !

Failure to do this with a 'Steady as you go' approach can lead to the caliper mounting bolts to shear off, so in turn can manifest ones frustrations and costs !

BTW, I think the Xantia's are good model to own (I own one too) as the build quality IMHO is far better than a BX, more on par of an XM (Which I have two off) !

It just seems rather unusual that this 'Caliper Corrosion' problem has occurred on the Xantias and C5's :o which I'd never seen on the BX/XM's !

I mentioned the caliper corrosion & the mechanic said they were fine, he thinks that the likely culprit is that these particular steel wheels may be the wrong one's. When its getting the exhaust welded up, i'll get him to take a look at the other steelies that came with the car to see if it is that or if he didn't spot the corrosion the 1st time around?

It does drive well, & is a lot more refined than the TXD, also eats more fuel, but it's size has come in very handy over the last few weeks. So i'm a bit dissapointed to have had to spend the money on the car, but the cambelt will last 100k or 10 years, so that works out approx 25 quid a year, which in the long term scheme of things is cheap really. Its just the initial outlay costs that are a bit annoying, however, i've no plans on not keeping the car for a considerable period of time, so in that respect i don't mind spending money when it resolves a situation for long period of time. Fingers crossed i have some luck with this car regarding other parts which are getting a bit old.

I did approx 90 odd miles today & i must say the tyres are super quiet, very impressed, not really given them a proper test of how much grip they have, but they do seem good so far & at just over £70 a corner, i think they are quite good value for money :)

It is strange not driving a bx at the moment, i need to get in touch with Shaun & get him onto my TZD soon. Still need to get a bloody cambelt cover for the valver, thats the only thing holding up Kitch from getting on with sorting that beast out, anyone got one spare?

If you could sort me out a complete cover, i could return the bits that i don't need? Please PM me for how many golden beer tokens i need to send to you for this life saving operation on valvey :)

Fine – I'll look to see what I have from the dismantled engine first which is in Bristol – otherwise I have an engine here in Wales which has other issues but does have a complete cover…
