Actually got SORN confirmation letter!

Of course they got the period start of SORN wrong - one month too early but heyho, better than nothing.

This is a question, but starts with a statement :? .....

If you are the new owner, you don't need a V890 to declare SORN, you can do it on line....
The Green Slip has the document number on it, as does the yellow and blue parts, the green one just has an extra digit at the beginning of the 11 digit number....

so I've been on line and registered SORN on a car I've just acquired.....

Question: this is the doc. no. of that V5, but will it change when they issue one to me, and so have I just registered it for the previous owner and not for me ?
..so I will still get a fine for not SORNing it ?

I would take every step to cover your a**. Those devils (faceless of course) will do almost anything to get a fine in. Keep a record somehow even if just a post on here which will have a date reference.

Correct, you've reached the right conclusion.

You can only do an online SORN if you're the registered keeper.
The Gov wrote:You must make a SORN by post if you’re:
  • recently registered as the vehicle’s keeper and have received the V5C registration certificate in the current month
  • not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper
Bottom right of this page ;) :
http://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn

Read notes on V890. V890 can be submitted together with V5C. Tick appropriate box. If no acknowledgement received after 4 weeks has elapsed, get on blower to them immediately on 0300 790 6802.

this is why a new keeper has to fill in the V890 at the same time as registering a vehicle in there name,

as SORN is not transferable from one keep to another,

you can only tax the vehicle with the green slip ( new keepers supplement )
