Tap for Wheel Bolts

Post by Brian »

Hi Folks,

Had a bit of a disaster yesterday.
Front wheel bearing noise all of a sudden, had a spare hub with good bearing and ball joint, after about 3 hours, managed to separate the ball taper, had to remove the whole arm and tackle it in the vice with much heat and welly...

Installed the spare hub, then when I inserted the wheel bolts, two threads in the hub were damaged, so could only use 2 bolts.

Idea, :  removed the flange from the original hub with a view to change it over, as usual, the inner part of the bearing remained on the flange,

So, any one know where I can buy, beg, steel or borrow a 12mm x 1.25mm tap, so I can reform the 2 offending flange threads... :?:

Done a search on ebay, no luck...

Fairly Standard those. Try these two firms, we get a lot of workshop / engineering tooling from both. They do next day delivery as well you might be able pay by cards (work have accounts)
in fact if you are realy strugling i can have a look in work we might have one you can have.
pm if you want and i will look on tuesday.

In conclusion.

I managed to get a thread tap from Buck and Hickman, N0. 2, taper ones were not in stock.
Dismantled the hub with part of the bearing on the stub, as I wanted to re tap the threads from the rear, as doing it from the front would not guarantee following the existing threads.

Success :D

Don't think there is a min order value.

Single tap £8.55 + Delivery £ 3.95 + VAT £2.19 = £14.69
So not too over the top, but VAT on delivery grinds a little...

But when you look at another way, thats equivalent to about half a BX...

Was supposed to be next day delivery Friday using UPS, waited in all day nothing came.

Phoned on Monday and they delivered with their own vehicle late pm, so managed to complete the task...
